The Space
Believed to be the oldest building still standing in Columbia, the Seibels House traces to 1796, built of hand-hewn lumber by A.M. Hale on land that had been part of Colonel Thomas Taylor’s plantation. The house passed through a handful of owners, including Captain Benjamin Elmore and later John Jacob Seibels, whose family held it for more than a century before it eventually came to Historic Columbia.
A 1920s renovation by architect J. Carroll Johnson gave the house its current Colonial Revival look, and a flanker building from the late 1820s or early 1830s still stands, originally used as a kitchen and laundry and likely as living quarters for the enslaved domestic workers who ran the household. The garden received a full replanting in 2007 under horticulturist A. Jenkins Farmer, tracing the evolution of southern gardening from the 1800s into the early 1900s.
Capacity & Layout
Indoors, the house seats 80 and holds 150 standing, while the full property, house and garden together, is rated for up to 350 guests, a spread that lets a couple choose between an intimate ceremony inside the historic rooms and a larger reception spilling into the garden. The three front rooms run roughly 24 feet square with high corniced ceilings, a floor plan repeated upstairs, which sets a real ceiling on how large any single indoor grouping can comfortably be.
The ceremony garden, with its trellises and fountain, is the natural spot for vows, while the indoor rooms with their fireplaces and the 1920s black and white tiled sunroom give a reception several distinct settings to move through rather than one continuous hall. Complimentary tables and chairs are provided for indoor use, which covers a meaningful share of a couple’s rental list before outside vendors are even involved.
Amenities
A bridal suite with its own private restroom gives the wedding party a place to get ready on site, and a catering prep kitchen supports outside caterers without them needing to bring in a full mobile setup. Two restrooms and a coat room round out the practical side of the house, and Historic Columbia staff are on site for the duration of the event to help things run smoothly.
Wireless internet and electricity run throughout both the interior and the gardens, useful for a band or DJ setting up outdoors as well as in, and a handicap-accessible ramp is available on request for guests who need it. The garden itself keeps regular hours, open Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm, which is worth knowing for couples wanting to walk the grounds before booking.
Location & Getting There
The Seibels House sits in Columbia’s historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since May 6, 1971, which places a wedding here inside one of the city’s older residential neighborhoods rather than a purpose-built event campus. That setting shapes the photographs as much as the house itself, with mature gardens and a genuinely historic streetscape around the property.
We’ve DJ’d a reception here, and the mix of spaces works in a DJ’s favor: the indoor rooms, with their fireplaces and corniced ceilings, hold sound well for dinner and toasts, while the covered porches and garden give an outdoor option for cocktail hour or dancing that needs its own portable setup separate from whatever is running inside.
