The Space
Frederick Sayen bought this 30-acre parcel in 1912, not far from his family’s rubber mill in Hamilton Square, and spent years filling the grounds with plants gathered on his travels through China, Japan, and England. The bungalow-style house he built carries an Arts and Crafts exterior with a Victorian interior, a mix that still defines the property. Hamilton Township purchased the land from developer David Cellars in 1988 and opened it to the public in 1991.
The gardens hold more than 1,000 azaleas and nearly 500 rhododendrons, backed by upwards of 250,000 spring bulbs and stands of dogwood, and the property throws its biggest gathering of the year around that display, the Azalea Festival, held every Mother’s Day. Outside that peak the grounds stay quieter, which is worth knowing if a couple wants their day, and their photographs, without a festival crowd sharing the paths, ponds, and gazebos that Sayen planted a century ago.
Capacity & Layout
The bungalow interior tops out at 98 guests, with 80 to 85 sitting more comfortably once a dance floor, DJ setup, and gift or cake tables are worked into the room. That range decides the guest list before invitations go out. A ceremony can happen inside the house or outdoors by special permit, and the Temple Gardens directly behind the house are reserved exclusively for whichever couple has booked the date, not shared with the general public that day.
Reception happens inside the house itself, with the grounds, walking trails, fish ponds, and gazebos available for portraits and cocktail hour before or after. The whole event, ceremony and reception together, is built around a 5-hour window, which is tight enough that a couple should decide early whether they want a first look, a receiving line, or a longer cocktail hour, since all three compete for the same block of time inside that house.
Amenities
The house itself is the amenity here: an Arts and Crafts exterior wrapped around a Victorian interior, built by Frederick Sayen in 1912 and largely unchanged in character since. Couples booking the Temple Gardens get that section of the property to themselves for the day, away from the daytime foot traffic that otherwise moves freely through the grounds, since the public gardens are normally open, and free, from dawn to dusk every day of the year.
Beyond the house and its grounds, there is little in the way of banquet-hall extras, no ballroom, no built-in bar setup, which is part of why couples choose it: the draw is the plant collection itself, azaleas and rhododendrons Sayen brought back from China, Japan, and England, plus fish ponds and gazebos scattered across the 30 acres that make for a genuinely different backdrop than a hotel or clubhouse.
Location & Getting There
We’ve worked a wedding at Sayen Garden, and the drive there feels more like arriving at a public park than a private venue, since it is one, tucked into Hamilton Square with the same trails and gazebos locals walk through on an ordinary afternoon. That means the setting is unmistakable: dense plantings, ponds, and a century-old bungalow rather than a generic hall, which is worth knowing when a couple is deciding how much of their day depends on the location itself.
Inside, the reception fits into a single historic room rather than a sprawling ballroom, so sound stays contained and even, and a DJ does not need to fight a cavernous space to fill it. The Victorian interior, with real walls and furnishings rather than open sky, absorbs sound rather than bouncing it, which makes for a warmer, easier mix than the open plantings and hard garden paths just outside its doors.
