The Space

The golf course at the center of this property was designed by Donald Ross in 1927, and Ross himself called the General Oglethorpe course one of his finest accomplishments, high praise from the architect behind some of the country’s best-known courses. Henry C. Walthour, one of Savannah’s wealthiest cotton brokers, had assembled the land on Wilmington Island in the early 1920s to build a prestigious community, and the club has carried that ambition through several eras since.

The property survived the 1929 stock market crash even after the hotel that anchored it did not, and in 1965 William Lattimore bought the club and had architect William C. Byrd renovate the course to PGA standards, adding irrigation, canals, lakes, and ponds. It became the Savannah Inn and Country Club in 1967, later a Sheraton hotel, before new owners Brianna and O C Welch III renamed it Savannah Country Club in 2018 and modernized its dining and event spaces.

Capacity & Layout

The ballroom is 4,200 square feet split into two separate rooms, so a couple can book the smaller room for an intimate wedding or open both for a larger guest list, and both rooms look out over the golf course and its fountain rather than a blank interior wall. That view is part of the layout, not an afterthought, the ballroom was placed specifically to look out over the grounds.

The ceremony site is a manicured courtyard with a covered trellis, which gives an outdoor wedding built-in structure and shade rather than an open lawn with no cover at all. From there, the layout moves guests naturally into the ballroom for the reception, with a bridal suite featuring vanities and illuminated mirrors and a separate men’s lounge with its own pre-event bar for the wedding party to prepare on either side.

Amenities

Beyond the ballroom, the club runs a full country club roster of amenities: six lighted Har-Tru clay tennis courts, four lighted pickleball courts, a seasonal pool staffed with certified lifeguards from May through September, and a fitness center with Matrix cardio and strength equipment plus locker rooms. Amy Bradley has served as head tennis professional here for many years, which says something about the stability of the club’s staff and programs.

The on-site restaurant runs six days a week with seasonal terrace dining, so a rehearsal dinner or a next-day brunch can happen at the same property without booking a separate restaurant. The club’s recent recognition backs up that day-to-day quality, it earned 2025 and 2026 honors for Best Golf Course and Best Bartender from Connect Savannah, awards tied directly to the same staff working weddings on the property.

Location & Getting There

Savannah Country Club sits on Wilmington Island, the same land Henry C. Walthour assembled in the early 1920s to build a prestigious community around, and that same land now carries golf, tennis, pickleball, and event space instead of a single hotel. The island setting keeps the club a short distance from Savannah while still feeling separate from the busy downtown streets guests would otherwise navigate.

We have worked a wedding in the ballroom here, and the two-room split matters for sound as much as it does for capacity: booking the smaller room keeps a DJ setup tight and full-sounding for a modest guest list, while opening both rooms into one larger space gives more air for a bigger band or system to fill, with the golf course views outside making it clear the room was built to be seen as well as heard.
