The Space

Sanctuary Farm has been managed without pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides for 25 years, and that organic practice runs through everything else on the 28-acre property. Meg and Tim Toben met in March 2002 at a lecture by eco-theologian Thomas Berry, started farming together on Tim’s land west of Chapel Hill, and founded The Eco-Institute in 2005 to teach sustainable agriculture and natural building, work that grew the farm from potluck dinners into the venue it is today.

The centerpiece is a renovated horse barn with a full-service catering kitchen, plus both enclosed and open-air lofts upstairs, so the same building holds a climate-controlled reception space and a more rustic, open-air room with a built-in stage. Downstairs the barn also holds a large kitchen, a dining area, a library, a living room, laundry, and four bathrooms, which is a working home as much as it is an event space.

Capacity & Layout

The farm holds up to 180 guests total, a number that fits both an intimate wedding and a fuller celebration without feeling like it is stretching the property past what it can comfortably handle. Three separate ceremony sites give real flexibility for that headcount: The Grove, an outdoor spot under trees, a pondside gazebo at the water’s edge, and the indoor Rustic Loft in the barn for a fully weatherproof backup plan.

Reception layout runs across two upstairs rooms in the barn: a climate-controlled loft that doubles as a yoga and dance space, and an open-air rustic loft with a built-in stage, which means the built-in stage is already there rather than something a couple has to rent and set up separately. Accessibility was clearly considered too, all downstairs and outdoor facilities are wheelchair accessible, and a stair lift rated for 300 pounds now reaches the barn lofts upstairs.

Amenities

Overnight stays are built into the property in a way few venues offer: four climate-controlled barn rooms, six yomes, and two yurts sleep up to 40 guests on site, so a wedding party and out-of-town family can stay through the whole weekend instead of driving in for one night. The full-service catering kitchen inside the barn means outside caterers can bring in real meals rather than working out of a tent.

The farm runs entirely on solar power and keeps a flourishing organic garden on the property, both real, working parts of the farm rather than decoration, and parking is ample with handicap accessible spaces just 30 feet from the barn entrance. County noise rules matter for planning the reception timeline: amplified music has to be off by 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and by 9pm on weekdays, so the last dance has a hard stop built into the schedule.

Location & Getting There

The farm sits eight miles west of Chapel Hill, about 40 minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport, 30 minutes from downtown Durham, and 20 minutes from Hillsborough, close enough for a full guest list to reach without an all-day drive. Meg spent 20 years as Executive Director of The Eco-Institute and received the Piedmont Environmental Leadership Award in 2015, work that shaped the land guests are actually standing on for the ceremony.

We have worked a wedding at Sanctuary Farm, and the two upstairs rooms handle sound very differently: the climate-controlled loft has a more contained, enclosed feel that holds a dance floor’s energy in the room, while the open-air rustic loft with its built-in stage lets sound breathe out into the surrounding trees, so the choice between them is really a choice about how the DJ setup should feel for the night.
