The Space
Brothers Zeno Daniel Hoots and Guy Andrew Hoots built this roller mill around 1935 as a two-story heavy timber and frame structure with an attached warehouse, processing wheat and corn into flour and feed for the region. It stands today as Winston-Salem’s only surviving twentieth-century grain mill, and its heavy timber construction, rather than a lighter modern frame, gives the main event room its distinct scale and weight.
The mill sat derelict until 2013, when developers Dewey Anderson and John Bryan began restoring it, and by 2017 it had reopened as West End Mill Works, a complex of three historic buildings between Bridge Street, Canal Drive, and Mill Works Street. Since 2022 the property has been owned by a team of entrepreneurs focused on supporting the small businesses now operating inside the restored mill, Roller Mill Events among them.
Capacity & Layout
The Roller Mill Events room seats 150 guests, a size that suits a mid-sized wedding comfortably within a single historic room rather than requiring a couple to spread across multiple spaces. Because the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014, the room retains its original heavy timber framing, which shapes the floor plan around the mill’s existing structural bays rather than an open, column-free hall.
A one-story metal-sided warehouse from the 1930s and a second warehouse added in the 1950s connect to the main mill building, giving the property additional square footage beyond the primary event room even though the wedding space itself centers on the original two-story structure. A couple planning for 150 seated guests is working within the mill’s original footprint, which keeps the room feeling intact rather than expanded for the occasion.
Amenities
As part of the West End Mill Works complex, the venue sits alongside other small businesses occupying the same restored buildings, giving a wedding here the texture of an active, mixed-use property rather than an isolated rental hall. The available material does not list specific in-house catering or bar service for the mill, so those arrangements are worth confirming directly for each wedding.
Transportation to and from parking areas can be arranged as an additional service, which suggests parking itself sits somewhat apart from the mill building, a detail worth planning around for guests unfamiliar with the property. Given the building’s age and historic listing, its systems and layout reflect a working restoration rather than new construction built specifically for events.
Location & Getting There
The mill sits within West End Mill Works, a short trip from downtown Winston-Salem, about five minutes by car or twenty minutes on foot, close enough that a couple can send guests downtown for lodging without a long drive back for the reception. The surrounding streets, Bridge Street, Canal Drive, and Mill Works Street, place the venue inside a small historic industrial district rather than out in open countryside.
That in-town setting means guests arrive to brick mill buildings and a walkable district rather than a rural drive, useful for a wedding party without cars or staying downtown. Inside the mill, heavy timber framing and original wood surfaces create a warmer, more absorbent sound than an open metal warehouse would, so a DJ setup in the main room benefits from the timber’s natural dampening rather than fighting an echo off bare metal walls.
