The Space

Revolution Mill opened in 1899, built by brothers Moses and Ceasar Cone as the South’s first flannel mill, and the mill operated for decades before closing in February 1982. Self-Help Ventures bought the 45-acre complex in September 2012 and began renovating it in the spring of 2013, turning nine of the historic buildings into a mixed-use campus of apartments, offices, restaurants and event space while keeping the original architecture intact rather than demolishing it.

The main event space, the Colonnade, keeps original maple floors, exposed brick and high ceilings alongside enormous windows that flood the room with light. One of the mill’s former spinning rooms, longer than two football fields and lined with two rows of 14-foot heart-pine columns, gives a sense of the scale these buildings were built at. The whole complex is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a real historic designation rather than a marketing label.

Capacity & Layout

The Colonnade hosts weddings and corporate events for up to 250 guests, an indoor/outdoor space that works well for a mid-to-large wedding without pushing into the biggest tier of local venues. Because it is indoor/outdoor, couples can plan a ceremony or cocktail hour that moves guests between covered and open-air space over the course of the event rather than keeping everyone in one room.

Color Works Meeting Space offers a second, more modern industrial-feel option on the same campus, useful for a rehearsal dinner or a smaller event tied to the same wedding weekend. With original maple floors and exposed brick throughout the Colonnade, couples get a historic textile-mill floor plan rather than a built-from-scratch ballroom, which shapes how tables and a dance floor fit into the existing columns and windows.

Amenities

Because Revolution Mill is a full mixed-use campus, amenities extend well beyond the event space itself, since restaurants, art galleries, a fitness center, a pet park and retail spaces are all part of the same property, giving guests places to explore before or after the ceremony. The campus also includes 150 apartments, so some guests may already know the building from living there or visiting residents.

The heart-pine columns and maple floors throughout the renovated buildings are original material from the mill’s working days, preserved rather than replaced during the 2013 renovation, which gives the Colonnade a texture and patina that a newly built venue cannot replicate. That history is part of what couples are paying for here, a working textile mill turned event space rather than a themed reproduction.

Location & Getting There

Revolution Mill sits on a 45-acre campus in Greensboro, and its scale, nine renovated buildings across the property, means guests are arriving at a small campus rather than a single building, so clear signage or a simple map for guests finding the Colonnade specifically is worth planning for ahead of the wedding day.

With original maple floors, exposed brick and high ceilings, the Colonnade is a hard-surfaced, large-volume room, similar in principle to the old spinning room’s open scale, so a DJ setup there needs to account for a live, reflective sound in a historic room rather than the sound-dampened feel of a carpeted modern ballroom.
