The Space
Rassie Wicker Park carries the name of a real person with a real connection to Pinehurst. Rassie Everton Wicker moved to the village in 1903 as a boy, was elected Moore County Surveyor at just 20, and spent his career working for Leonard Tufts as a surveyor, home builder, cartographer, and landscaper, meaning he had a hand in laying out the streets a couple might drive down on the way to their own wedding here. He died in 1972, and the Village of Pinehurst named this park for him in 1995, after acquiring the 100-acre property in 1994 specifically to keep it from becoming an upscale retirement community.
For events, three outdoor spaces are reservable: the Magnolia Lawn, the Meadow Lawn, and the Pergola Garden, along with the Timmel Pavilion, a 30-by-60-foot shelter with a slate roof and copper gutters built adjacent to the Pergola and Meadow. We have played a wedding here before, so we know how those spaces connect to each other on the ground, not just on a site map.
Capacity & Layout
There is no published guest capacity for the reservable lawns or the pavilion, so a couple planning a wedding here should confirm exact numbers directly, but the layout gives a sense of scale: a 30-by-60-foot pavilion is a defined, roofed footprint suited to a moderate seated group, while the adjoining Magnolia Lawn, Meadow Lawn, and Pergola Garden give open lawn space around it for a ceremony, additional seating, or a cocktail hour.
That mix of a fixed covered structure next to open lawn is useful for weather planning specifically, since a couple can anchor the reception under the pavilion’s slate roof while still using the surrounding lawns for a ceremony or overflow space if the day is clear.
Amenities
The park’s centerpiece for atmosphere is its 33-acre Arboretum, developed by the Village Heritage Foundation and home to 17 varieties of magnolias in its Magnolia Garden, a detail that gives the Magnolia Lawn its name and its backdrop. Three miles of walking trails, a paved loop, and brick sidewalks run through the broader park, connecting into the Moore County Greenway Trail System beyond the property line.
An accessible concrete path connects the parking lot directly to the shelter and splash pad area, and a concession stand and restroom facility sit on site, practical conveniences for a wedding that treats the whole park, not just the reserved lawn, as part of the day. Funding for the Arboretum came in part from a $125,000 gift tied to the 2005 U.S. Open, along with two anonymous donations, a sign of how much community investment has gone into the grounds beyond the basic park amenities.
Location & Getting There
Rassie Wicker Park sits in the Village of Pinehurst, sharing its grounds with the Village Hall, Police Station, and Fire Station, a genuinely civic property rather than a private estate. Its trails connect to the wider Moore County Greenway System, so the park functions as both an event space and part of the town’s everyday infrastructure.
The Timmel Pavilion’s roofed, open-sided structure sits differently for sound than a fully enclosed room: it carries music and speeches out across the adjoining Magnolia and Meadow Lawns rather than containing them, so a DJ setup under the pavilion has to project across open lawn on at least one side rather than working within four walls.
