The Space

Raritan Valley Country Club traces back to November 1911, when it was organized at the estate of Senator Joseph S. Frelinghuysen as the Somerville Country Club, taking its current name in June 1917. The 18-hole golf course, designed by Herbert H. Barker of England, opened in September 1912, and in 1927 the club purchased 155 acres from the Frelinghuysen estate and the Bridgewater Land Association for $50,000, the land the club still sits on today.

The clubhouse has been updated more than once since: remodeled in 1989 and expanded by roughly 6,000 square feet during a 2008-2009 renovation, bringing it to its current 30,000 square feet. President Warren Harding was a frequent house guest of Senator Frelinghuysen here in the early 1920s, a detail that says something about how long this has been a gathering place for people, not just golfers.

Capacity & Layout

The club’s banquet rooms accommodate weddings from as few as 10 guests up to more than 200, a wide enough range that both an intimate ceremony and a large full-club reception fit within the same venue rather than requiring different vendors for different sizes. A separate Board Room, equipped with teleconferencing capability, is available for smaller private dinners or meetings tied to the wedding weekend.

That range matters because it means a couple is not locked into one format. A rehearsal dinner in the Board Room, a ceremony in a smaller banquet room, and a full reception in the larger space are all possible on the same property, using rooms sized appropriately for each part of the weekend rather than one room doing everything.

Amenities

Beyond the banquet rooms, the 30,000 square foot clubhouse includes indoor and outdoor dining, and the grounds carry a full slate of recreation: the 18-hole championship course at 6,808 yards and a par of 72, four Har-Tru tennis hydrocourts, four pickleball courts, two indoor squash courts, and a heated resort-style pool. On-site catering and a banquet kitchen support events directly, and the property description mentions a wine cellar among its dining facilities.

For a wedding weekend that includes activities beyond the ceremony and reception, that recreational range gives guests something to do the day before or the morning after, from a round of golf to a match on the hydrocourts. Phase One of the club’s own master plan renovations has already been completed, a sign the property continues to reinvest in its facilities rather than letting them age in place.

Location & Getting There

The club sits on 155 acres in Bridgewater, New Jersey, grounds purchased from the Frelinghuysen estate nearly a century ago and still carrying that history in the layout of the golf course and clubhouse grounds around the event spaces. The property’s age and continuous operation since 1911, through a new clubhouse dedicated in 1959 and further renovations in 1989 and 2008-2009, give it a settled, established feel rather than a newer build.

Both indoor and outdoor dining spaces are part of the clubhouse, which means a DJ setup can work an indoor banquet room with the acoustics of an enclosed space, or an outdoor dining area against the open grounds of a working golf course, depending on which room a couple books for the reception.
