The Space
Project 658 did not start as an event space. The organization traces back to 2009, when a group of 27 men traveled to Uganda and came home with the idea that became Project 658, formally established the following year in 2010. It now operates as a registered nonprofit serving immigrant and refugee families across three pillars: education, vocation, and health and wellness. Weddings held here support that mission directly.
The event side of the operation is the 658 Center, built around a 7,000 square foot multipurpose room. The room comes with a stage, a projector, and two screens, along with basic sound and stage lighting already in place, so a couple is not walking into a bare shell. More than 1,500 square feet of lobby and cafe space sits off the main room for guests to gather before doors open.
Capacity & Layout
That 7,000 square foot main room is what decides the shape of the day. Auditorium-style seating tops out at 400, while banquet rounds bring the practical number down to 320. A couple planning a seated dinner and dancing should plan around the 320 figure, since round tables, a dance floor, and a DJ booth all eat into the auditorium number in ways theater rows do not.
The lobby and cafe area, at more than 1,500 square feet, gives a cocktail hour or guest check-in a room of its own instead of forcing it into a corner of the reception space. That separation matters for pacing: guests can mingle out front while the main room finishes its turnover from ceremony to reception, which keeps the night moving without anyone standing around watching staff flip chairs.
Amenities
Outside, the grounds include a cobblestoned path, a fire pit with its own seating, and a manicured garden area kept specifically for pictures. That combination gives a couple three distinct backdrops within a short walk of each other, useful for a photographer working quickly between the ceremony and the reception.
Because Project 658 is a working nonprofit, booking the space also means the room rental supports its education, vocation, and health and wellness programs for immigrant and refugee families, a detail some couples like knowing going in. We have played this room before, so we know how the stage and screens sit relative to the dance floor and where a booth fits without blocking sightlines to either, and how the existing stage lighting reads once the reception lighting comes up.
Location & Getting There
The 658 Center sits off Central Avenue near Plaza Midwood, close enough to that corridor’s restaurants and bars that an after-party is a short drive rather than a production. It is an easy address for out-of-town guests staying near uptown or Plaza Midwood to find without much routing, and the neighborhood’s walkable restaurant scene gives a wedding party somewhere close by to send guests between the ceremony and the start of the reception if there is a gap in the schedule.
Sound-wise, the main room is a single large hard-floored space built for auditorium use, which means it already carries basic sound and stage lighting rather than being a totally blank room. A DJ setup there works with that existing infrastructure, running dance music through the house or supplemental gear while the stage handles toasts and speeches, all inside one continuous room rather than split across separate spaces.
