The Space

Portobello has been serving Bergen County since 1992, and it actually operates two separate venues under one name: a restaurant with seven named private rooms, and a separate banquet hall built specifically for larger functions, which has been hosting weddings and celebrations for years. A couple planning a smaller gathering and a couple planning a 250-person reception are choosing between genuinely different buildings, not just different rooms in the same space.

The restaurant side keeps its everyday character even for private events, with rooms named the Lounge, the Sala, the Library, the Family Room, the Bar, the Cucina, and the Racetrack, each sized differently for different party sizes. The banquet hall, by contrast, is purpose-built for functions, anchored by the Dome Room, which is described as a ballroom in its own right and regularly hosts weddings and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs.

Capacity & Layout

On the restaurant side, capacity runs from the Family Room and Racetrack at 20 people up to the Sala or Cucina at 120, with a 30-adult minimum for private party bookings, so smaller gatherings have real room to choose from rather than being squeezed into one banquet space. The banquet hall scales up from there, from the Front and Back Rooms in the 50-to-70 range up to the Main Floor at 70 to 130.

For the largest weddings, the Dome Room and Annex Room combine into a single space holding 120 to 250 guests, which is the number that matters most for a couple planning a full traditional reception with a dance floor and band or DJ setup. The banquet hall’s 50-adult minimum keeps it scaled for real receptions rather than small private dinners, which is what the restaurant’s rooms are built for instead.

Amenities

Both buildings offer on-site catering and a full bar, and Portobello provides large private parking for guests at both locations, which matters given how much parking pressure Bergen County restaurants can create on a busy weekend. The banquet hall also includes a bridal room for pre-ceremony preparation, a detail that specifically supports wedding bookings rather than just corporate or family events.

The restaurant side adds a summer veranda and pergola overlooking a waterfall, giving a couple an outdoor cocktail-hour option in warmer months that the banquet hall does not have. Worth knowing ahead of time: the restaurant is listed as wheelchair accessible, but the banquet hall’s upstairs areas are noted as lacking proper handicap access, so any guests with mobility needs should be planned for on the ground floor.

Location & Getting There

Both the restaurant and the banquet hall sit in Oakland, in Bergen County, close enough to each other that a couple splitting a rehearsal dinner and a reception between the two buildings would not be asking guests to travel far between them. The two properties draw from the same surrounding towns along the county’s western edge, and the large private parking lot at each location means guests arriving from different directions are not left circling for street spots on a busy weekend night.
