The Space
Pop’s Farm is a 150-acre property in the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains outside Martinsville, Virginia, and most couples know it first as the home of the Rooster Walk Music & Arts Festival. The festival began in 2009 as a memorial and fundraiser honoring two childhood friends from Martinsville, Edwin "the Rooster" Penn and Walker Shank, and it grew from roughly 600 people at its original site to nearly 5,000 by 2015, when it outgrew that ground and moved to Pop’s Farm.
That festival history shapes what the property is built to handle: open acreage, a pond at the center, a covered stage, and a working wedding tent, all designed to move large numbers of people comfortably outdoors. A couple planning a wedding here is essentially borrowing infrastructure that was built for a multi-day music festival, which means the grounds are used to hosting a crowd rather than being adapted for one.
Capacity & Layout
The covered picnic shelter holds up to 125 people, which is the number to plan a seated dinner around if you want everyone under a roof for the meal. For a larger guest list, the property adds a professional-grade white wedding tent measuring roughly 30 by 50 feet, so the shelter and tent together give a couple room to separate a covered dining capacity from open-air ceremony or reception space depending on the size of the guest list.
Beyond the shelter and tent, the layout includes a covered stage for music, a Pine Grove area with mature trees, and more than 75 acres set aside for tent camping in both shaded and open grass sections, with multiple graded areas for RV parking. That much room means ceremony, reception, and any overflow camping for out-of-town guests can each get their own section of the property instead of competing for the same clearing.
Amenities
Because the farm hosts a major festival every year, it already has ample on-site parking built in, along with covered structures, in the picnic shelter and stage, that give shade and shelter without requiring a couple to rent them separately. The pond at the center of the property adds a natural focal point for photos that does not need to be arranged or decorated.
For guests coming from out of town, the property’s camping infrastructure, shaded and grass tent sites plus multiple RV areas, means a wedding weekend can turn into an actual weekend, with people staying on the grounds rather than driving back and forth from a hotel. That is a genuine amenity most single-day venues cannot offer.
Location & Getting There
Pop’s Farm is less than an hour from Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro and about 10 miles from the North Carolina-Virginia state line, putting it within reach of guests traveling from either state. It sits roughly 54 miles from Roanoke, 58 miles from both Greensboro and Winston-Salem, and about 20 miles from Danville, so most guests are looking at an hour or so on the road either way.
We have worked this property before, and because almost everything happens outdoors under open sky or beneath the picnic shelter and wedding tent, sound needs to travel across open acreage rather than bounce off walls, which calls for a DJ setup built for outdoor coverage and clear direction toward the crowd rather than the reflected sound you would rely on in an enclosed ballroom.
