The Space

Plaza Baptist Church was founded in 1938 at the corner of 36th Street and The Plaza, in what is now Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood, and the congregation’s story is really a story of decline and then a deliberate rebuild. In December 2020, Brian Davis was struck by how underresourced uptown Charlotte was and began praying about church planting, and shortly after, leadership at Hickory Grove Baptist Church reached out to him about revitalizing Plaza specifically.

Davis became interim pastor in March 2021 and worked with Hickory Grove on a revitalization plan, and in August 2021 the church relaunched with a new pastor and a new vision. Thirty-two new people joined the roughly 20 original members who remained, so a congregation that had thinned out over decades came back with new leadership and a substantially larger group than it had held for years.

Capacity & Layout

The material available describes a worship sanctuary used for Sunday services, but it does not give a specific seating count, so a couple considering Plaza for a wedding should confirm exact capacity directly with the church rather than assume a number based on the building’s history or its neighborhood.

Beyond the main sanctuary, the property includes a guest tent set up near the parking area and a children’s ministry space serving ages 6 weeks through 5th grade. Those additional spaces suggest a property built for a full slate of weekly programming rather than a single-room chapel, which can matter for a wedding weekend that needs somewhere for younger guests or overflow seating.

Amenities

As a working church rather than a dedicated event venue, Plaza’s amenities are built around Sunday programming: a children’s ministry area sized for infants through elementary-age kids, and a guest tent that suggests the congregation is used to hosting more people outdoors than the sanctuary alone seats. That combination of an indoor sanctuary and an outdoor tent gives a wedding some built-in flexibility for where guests gather before and after the ceremony itself.

The church sits on 2.19 acres in total, which is modest for the NoDa area but gives the property some room around the building itself, including the parking referenced below. As a Southern Baptist Convention congregation, couples planning a wedding here should expect the ceremony to follow that tradition’s general format, and it is worth asking the church directly about how far its own guidelines flex for an outside couple’s specific requests.

Location & Getting There

NoDa is Charlotte’s arts and entertainment district, and Plaza sits right at a busy corner within it, at 36th Street and The Plaza, which puts a wedding here in the middle of one of the city’s more walkable, gallery-and-restaurant neighborhoods rather than a quiet suburban lot. Parking is available in lots off Herrin Avenue, on the right side of the church.

For sound, a traditional sanctuary built for congregational worship generally has hard pews, high ceilings, and surfaces meant to carry a choir or a speaking voice without amplification, which is a different acoustic environment than a flat-floored reception hall, so a DJ setting up for a reception in or near the sanctuary should plan speaker placement around that natural reverberation rather than against it.
