The Space
The name Oxbow comes straight from the land: an oxbow is the U-shaped bend a river carves into its banks, and this 10-acre estate in Clayton sits right at that bend in the Neuse River. The main house dates back to the early 1900s, when it was built as a private residence for a prominent local family, and it stayed a home for generations before Golden Hour Collective and event planner Priscilla Walls, who brings 15 years in the Triangle’s wedding scene, turned it into the estate it is today.
The 8,000-square-foot main house keeps its antique European details and a deliberately neutral color palette, with marble interiors and multiple fireplaces throughout, an open-air veranda wrapping the building, and an atrium that pulls in natural light. Two custom-built wooden bars sit inside the main house itself, and the property is gated and private, reached by a winding drive off NC Highway 42 that sets the estate apart from the road well before guests arrive.
Capacity & Layout
The River View Lawn is the big number here, holding up to 700 guests standing or seated on its paved veranda and lawn, framed by live oak trees with a direct view of the Neuse River, which makes it the space for a couple planning a large wedding with room to spare. For something smaller and enclosed, the West Stables offers a temperature-controlled indoor reception space with wood finishings and stone details, seating up to 150.
Beyond those two anchor spaces, the Event Lawn works for an outdoor cocktail hour or a more intimate reception, and the outdoor garden serves as another ceremony option alongside the River View Lawn itself. With the Main House ballroom, West Stables, veranda, Event Lawn, and River View Lawn all available, a couple is really choosing a combination of spaces for ceremony, cocktails, and reception rather than picking just one room.
Amenities
The estate runs a state-of-the-art catering kitchen for on-site food service, and overnight lodging for up to 18 guests makes a full weekend buyout possible, with the bridal suite offering a private bathroom and a separate groom’s suite also on site. The River House honeymoon suite sits right on the riverbank with its own private balcony, and the Aster Chalet gives another private retreat option for the wedding party.
The property is wheelchair accessible, and close parking is available for vendor unloading, a detail that matters for a DJ or caterer moving equipment in before the event starts. Between the bridal suite, groom’s suite, River House, Aster Chalet, and Foxglove Cottage, the estate can genuinely house a wedding party for the whole weekend rather than just the day of the event.
Location & Getting There
Oxbow Estate sits about 30 minutes from Raleigh, tucked behind a gated, private entrance off NC Highway 42, with a winding drive that gives guests a sense of arrival before the estate itself even comes into view. The Neuse River runs along the property, and the River View Lawn’s live oaks and river views are the setting most couples choose for photographs.
With the River View Lawn open to the sky and framed by oaks along the river, a DJ working an outdoor reception there sets up for open-air coverage across a lawn that can hold 700 people, while the West Stables, temperature-controlled and finished in wood and stone, gives a smaller, enclosed room where sound stays contained and the dance floor holds its energy without fighting outdoor wind.
