The Space
Frank and Lita Lilly bought the land that became Overmountain Vineyards in 1990, and it stayed farmland for another decade before the family planted its first Cabernet Sauvignon vines in 2000, adding four more grape varieties over the following four years. Frank later studied at Surry Community College’s Viticulture & Enology program starting in 2007, working under Lee Griffin at Rockhouse Vineyards along the way, and the Tasting Room opened in 2010 as the property’s first dedicated visitor space.
Today the vineyard covers 70 acres in the Tryon Foothills, with 16 acres planted in French vinifera grapes and another 2 acres in blueberries, and a portion of the historic Overmountain Victory Trail runs directly through the property. The winery is run by Frank alongside his daughter Sofia Lilly, a second-generation winemaker with a Western Carolina University degree and a Certified Sommelier credential from the Court of Master Sommeliers, so the operation carries two generations of hands-on work in the same ground.
Capacity & Layout
The tasting room sits indoors with an outdoor porch attached, looking out over the Tryon Foothills, and the property offers private gathering spaces for events beyond the main tasting room itself. No published seating number is attached to those spaces, so a couple planning a wedding here should confirm exact capacity directly with the vineyard before finalizing a guest list.
What is on record is that Overmountain is adults-only, with no children permitted on the premises, a detail that shapes the guest list before it shapes the floor plan. Three luxury villas on site, each sleeping four guests with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a private driveway, mean part of the wedding party or close family can stay overnight rather than driving back down the mountain after the reception.
Amenities
Between the vineyard’s own wine program, built around Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Petit Manseng grown on the estate’s 16 vinifera acres, and the tasting room itself, the property already functions as a working hospitality space before any wedding is added to it. The private gathering spaces set aside for events give a couple a spot separate from regular tasting room traffic.
The three on-site villas double as amenities beyond simple lodging: free parking, private driveways, and fully stocked kitchens mean a wedding party can handle a morning-after brunch or a rehearsal dinner without leaving the property. With the adults-only policy in place, the crowd on any given event day is entirely guests old enough to be part of the toast, which tends to keep the room settled and attentive.
Location & Getting There
Overmountain Vineyards sits in the Tryon Foothills on 70 acres that have been in the Lilly family since 1990, land chosen for its bones as a vineyard site long before it became a wedding destination. The historic Overmountain Victory Trail crossing the property adds a piece of Revolutionary War history to the grounds that a couple can point out to guests during a toast or a ceremony program.
With the tasting room’s outdoor porch facing the Foothills and the private gathering spaces set apart from regular visitor traffic, a DJ working an outdoor event here plans for open-air sound across rolling vineyard rows, while any reception held closer to the tasting room itself benefits from the building’s indoor structure to anchor speakers and keep the mix controlled against the hillside wind.
