The Space
Phil and Ellie Mabe met at UNC in 2005 and started brewing on a five gallon home setup, then spent a decade working breweries and event venues out in Lake Tahoe before moving back to their hometown of Wilmington in 2019. Outer Dunes Brewing opened in May 2021, toward the tail end of the pandemic, on a property in the Porters Neck area, tucked among ancient oaks that shape the whole feel of the place today.
The brewery started small, with a one-barrel pilot system, and grew into a 2,400-square-foot production facility built around a 10-barrel Premier Stainless brewhouse that came online in early 2023. On site now, that growth shows up as three distinct spaces: a rustic Tap House with indoor bar seating and a covered open-air bar, an outdoor beer garden shaded by flowering shrubs and old oak and loquat trees, and the Beach House, a private indoor event space set apart from the taproom crowd.
Capacity & Layout
The outdoor beer garden holds around 200 people, the number to plan around for a reception that spills outside under the oaks, while the indoor Beach House seats 50, sized more for a rehearsal dinner, a smaller reception, or a ceremony that needs to move inside on short notice. Because the two spaces sit apart from each other, a couple choosing Outer Dunes is really choosing between an open-air party under trees or a tighter indoor gathering.
The property also includes a courtyard with a stone archway, Astroturf, cornhole, and a gazebo built for musicians, plus the Tap House itself for guests who want to drift between the bar and the party. Local musicians and food trucks already visit regularly, so the grounds are used to hosting live sound and a crowd, worth knowing when planning where a DJ booth and dance floor will go relative to the gazebo and the beer garden’s own layout.
Amenities
Outer Dunes pours a full lineup on site: ten beers, wines, kombucha, cocktails, cider, and seltzers, alongside the beers brewed in house, so there is no need to bring in outside bar service for the reception itself. Outside food is welcome, and Chipotle and Nori Sushi sit next door for anyone who wants to supplement catering, a detail that matters for a couple planning a casual, food-truck-style reception rather than a formal plated dinner.
The venue is pet friendly for leashed dogs, and the beer garden is family friendly until 6pm daily, though children are not permitted in the Tap House, the Boat House, or the firepit area after that. Ellie brings event-planning and catering background to the operation and Phil brings the brewing side, a combination that shows in how the property is set up to actually run events rather than just pour beer.
Location & Getting There
Outer Dunes sits in the Porters Neck area of Wilmington, set back among the property’s ancient oaks rather than fronting a busy street, which gives the beer garden its shaded, tucked-away feel. Hours run Monday through Thursday from 4 to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from noon to 11pm, and Sunday from noon to 9pm, a schedule worth checking against a wedding day timeline since it is still an operating taproom around any private event.
For sound, the split between spaces matters: the open-air beer garden and courtyard, with their trees and hard landscaping, need a DJ setup built for outdoor coverage and wind, while the indoor Beach House, seating 50, offers a tighter, more controlled room where a smaller sound system reaches every table without pushing volume out into the taproom next door.
