The Space

Ohoopee Match Club opened in October 2018 on a 3,500 acre property that tech entrepreneur Michael Walrath purchased in 2016, land that had previously been an onion farm and a disused hunting plantation near the Ohoopee River. Walrath, who sold his company Right Media to Yahoo for $850 million in 2007, brought in golf architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner to design the course, with Hanse having first studied the site as far back as 2006.

The clubhouse, lodge, and cabins were built to echo the agricultural structures already found in the surrounding region, so the buildings sit into the landscape rather than standing apart from it. Even the club’s logo reflects that history, a freshly picked Vidalia onion with three entwined serpents as roots, a nod to both the former onion farm and the eastern indigo snake native to the area.

Capacity & Layout

The property centers on golf, with a 22-hole layout that includes an 18-hole championship course measuring 7,325 yards at par 72, and a separate 5,610 yard, par 69 course called the Whiskey Routing that drops four of the championship holes and adds four alternate holes in their place. Beyond the course itself, the club offers 12 guest rooms in the clubhouse along with four lodges, each with eight guest rooms and its own large gathering room.

That lodging setup, four separate lodges plus clubhouse rooms, means a private event here can house a real number of guests on site rather than sending everyone offsite after the evening ends. The course itself is walking only, with no golf carts permitted, which keeps the grounds quiet and uninterrupted by cart traffic during an event held near the course.

Amenities

Beyond golf, the property includes two stocked lakes for fishing, upland wing shooting, and sporting clays, giving a private event here activities well beyond a single ballroom. The clubhouse bar and dining area, run with on-site chefs, anchors the food and drink side of the property, and the Whiskey Routing course even has a tee marker stocked with Woodford Reserve for players.

Course Superintendent Rhett Baker has been on site since construction began and brings extensive golf management experience, the kind of continuity that keeps grounds this well regarded consistent year over year. The club has been recognized for that consistency too, winning Golf Digest’s 2019 Best New Private Course award and currently ranked 3rd in Georgia and 36th nationally by Golf Digest.

Location & Getting There

Ohoopee Match Club sits in rural Cobbtown, Georgia, on former farmland near the Ohoopee River, with the closest airport in Vidalia about 20 minutes away and Savannah roughly 72 miles out. The club operates seasonally, open from mid-September to mid-June and closed through the hottest stretch of the Georgia summer, when the heat makes the walking-only course a harder proposition.

For a DJ, an event at the clubhouse or one of the lodge gathering rooms means working in an enclosed space built with the same agricultural-influenced materials as the rest of the property, wood and simple structural lines that hold sound well for an indoor reception, while anything held outdoors near the lakes or course would need fully self contained equipment given the open, rural setting around it.
