The Space

The NuWray Hotel has been open on the Burnsville town square since 1833, which makes it North Carolina’s oldest continuously operating hotel, and the three-story colonial building a couple tours today has hosted guests from Mark Twain to Elvis Presley over nearly two centuries. That kind of history is not a marketing line here, it is the literal age of the floors and windows a wedding party would be standing among.

Current owners Amanda and James Keith took on a full restoration that ran more than two and a half years, replacing all the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems while preserving the historic wood floors and original windows, and the hotel reopened in the summer of 2024. Twenty-six rooms spread across two buildings, the 22-room main hotel and the four-room Carriage House above Carriage House Sundries, give an out-of-town wedding party a real place to stay together on-site.

Capacity & Layout

Twenty-two rooms across three floors in the main hotel, every one with an en-suite bathroom, means a wedding party can book the whole building out for a weekend and have guests genuinely living in the same historic structure rather than a modern annex. There is no elevator in the historic main building, worth knowing for guests who need step-free access, though staff assists with luggage between floors.

The Carriage House started as exactly what its name says, housing guest carriages and driver quarters, and later served as the Burnsville Painting School before becoming four guest rooms above the on-site cafe and bar. That layered history gives a couple two distinct buildings to use across a wedding weekend: the formal main hotel and the more casual, artist-history Carriage House.

Amenities

Common areas across the property include a lobby and a bar, spaces a couple can use for a welcome gathering the night before a wedding or a smaller post-ceremony toast without booking a separate venue. A full-service restaurant was in the works as of fall 2024, which would let a wedding weekend’s meals stay on property from rehearsal dinner through Sunday brunch.

Free parking is available on site, a genuine convenience for a downtown property on Burnsville’s town square where street parking can be tight, and it means out-of-town guests are not hunting for a lot after checking in. Bar service in the lobby area gives a couple a low-key spot for a welcome drink or an after-hours gathering once the formal reception winds down.

Location & Getting There

Burnsville sits in Yancey County, in the mountains of Western North Carolina, and NuWray’s location right on the town square puts guests within walking distance of the rest of downtown. That walkability matters for a wedding weekend spread across a rehearsal dinner, a ceremony, and a reception, since guests can move between events on foot rather than needing a car for every leg.

The mountain setting also means a couple gets seasonal color and cooler evening temperatures that a lowland venue cannot offer, part of why Burnsville draws wedding parties from across the state. The main hotel’s historic wood floors and original windows, three stories of them without an elevator, mean sound travels naturally through the building’s older bones, so a DJ working a reception here typically keeps the system compact and lets the room’s own character carry the evening rather than filling it with volume.
