The Space

The North Carolina Botanical Garden is operated by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and focuses on the cultivation and display of southeastern native plants across over 1,200 acres. The garden’s first public offering, the Nature Trails, opened in 1966, building on work that botanist William Chambers Coker began in 1903 with Coker Arboretum. The garden expanded significantly in the 1950s-1980s with major gift contributions and dedicated acreage, and the 367-acre Mason Farm Biological Reserve was formally established in 1984. The James and Delight Allen Education Center, dedicated in October 2009, became the first LEED Platinum-certified state-owned building in North Carolina and serves as the main visitor and event hub. Reeves Auditorium seats 160 guests for banquet-style dinner with round tables, 200 for theater-style seating, or 120 for a reception with dance floor. Outdoor ceremony sites include the Perennial Circle, Sara Waitt Breezeway (covered outdoor space), Coker Arboretum, and Koch Memorial Forest Theatre, each offering distinct garden or woodland settings for an outdoor ceremony or cocktail hour. Multiple configurations are possible, from ceremony and reception in different spaces to small intimate gatherings in a single area.

The 1,200-acre scope means couples have substantial flexibility in designing their event across multiple garden areas and interior spaces.

Free parking is available with a permeable paving system that manages stormwater. Restrooms in the Allen Education Center are fully accessible, with four single-occupancy gender-neutral options as well. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible, and free all-terrain wheelchairs are available for guests who need assistance on the trails or grounds. WiFi is available in the Education Center. General admission to the display gardens and nature trails is free to the public, so the garden is a working landscape, not a closed venue. Couples should clarify event policies and any exclusive-use arrangements when booking, as the garden operates as a public conservation space.

The venue provides no on-site catering, so couples must arrange outside food service. Bar service and alcohol policies should be confirmed directly with the garden’s events coordinator. Location & Getting There

Chapel Hill sits in Orange County in the Piedmont region of central North Carolina, roughly 30 minutes southwest of Raleigh and 90 minutes from Charlotte. Raleigh-Durham International Airport, about 30 minutes away, offers the best commercial air access. Chapel Hill is home to UNC and is known for college town atmosphere, restaurants, shopping, and outdoor recreation. Downtown Chapel Hill is walkable and close to the botanical garden.
