The Space
Moshulu is a four-masted tall ship permanently docked at Penn’s Landing on the Delaware River, built in 1904 in Glasgow and renamed decades later in honor of the Seneca people, a name that translates to something close to fearless. It was pulled from Finland in 1968 for restoration, towed to Philadelphia in 1974, and after a fire and a full 1994 restoration by HMS Ventures, re-opened as the luxury liner-style venue it is today, re-christened by Mayor Ed Rendell in 1996.
The ship carries five decks and seven private dining rooms, along with open-air and tented deck space and an upper-deck bar. A major 2019 renovation added a 139-foot beachwood fish sculpture suspended above the Captain’s Dining Table, one of the more striking design details on board. Moshulu is also the only restaurant in the world housed aboard a tall ship, a fact that shapes how an event here feels different from a standard banquet hall.
Capacity & Layout
The ship holds up to 1,000 people across its combined decks and rooms, so the practical capacity for any single wedding depends heavily on which combination of dining rooms and deck space gets booked. Couples planning a large wedding have real room to work with here, while a smaller guest list can settle into one of the seven private dining rooms instead of the full ship.
Ceremonies can be held on deck, either fully outdoors or under cover, with the reception moving across multiple decks and dining rooms afterward. That multi-level, multi-room layout means a wedding here often flows through several distinct spaces over the course of the evening rather than staying in one room, which is worth mapping out in advance so guests, and the DJ setup, know where each part of the night happens.
Amenities
The tented decks are heated, which keeps outdoor space usable across most of the year rather than only in warm months, and the upper-deck bar gives cocktail hour its own area separate from the dining rooms. Parking runs $20 per vehicle in the lot adjacent to the ship, with metered street parking nearby at $1 per hour for guests who prefer not to valet.
The dining rooms themselves carry real character from the ship’s restoration: the State Room has a mirrored ceiling and dark wood beams, and the Captain’s Dining Table sits beneath that beachwood light sculpture added in 2019. Those are the kinds of period details that photograph well and give a reception a sense of occasion the moment guests step inside, distinct from a modern hotel ballroom.
Location & Getting There
Moshulu sits on the Delaware River waterfront at Penn’s Landing in Philadelphia, with the city skyline visible from the outdoor decks alongside the river itself, so the view changes depending on which side of the ship a couple is standing on. That waterfront setting is central to why couples choose it, since it puts a wedding in the middle of the city without holding it in a conventional building.
The ship measures 359 feet long, which puts real distance between the decks and the private dining rooms below, and sound behaves accordingly: music on an open deck disperses into the river air and needs speakers aimed to hold the dance floor together, while the enclosed dining rooms, with their wood paneling and lower ceilings, keep sound contained and carry a DJ’s setup much like an indoor reception would.
