The Space
Eleven of the twelve astronauts who walked on the Moon trained for celestial navigation inside this dome between 1959 and 1975, and Neil Armstrong logged more time here than any other astronaut, twenty days across eleven sessions starting in March 1964. Morehead Planetarium opened on the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus on May 10, 1949, the first planetarium in the American South and the first ever built on a university campus anywhere in the world.
The building was designed by Eggers & Higgins, the same firm behind the Jefferson Memorial, at a cost of 3 million dollars that made it the most expensive building in North Carolina when it opened. A 2010 fulldome digital video system, funded by GlaxoSmithKline and the largest such installation in the southeastern United States, now runs beneath a dome that still carries its original astronaut-training history into every event held under it.
Capacity & Layout
The dome theater seats about 240 people beneath a dome 68 feet across and 44 feet tall, a number that sets the ceiling for a full-room reception rather than a cocktail hour spread across multiple spaces. Facility rental covers the theater along with the State Dining Room and the exhibit floors, so a couple can plan a ceremony or program in the dome and move guests to a separate room for dinner.
Rentals here do require a science education activity as part of the event, a condition unique to this venue and worth building into the program early with the planetarium’s staff rather than treating as an afterthought. The building’s top floor also holds an observatory with a 24-inch telescope operated by UNC’s Physics and Astronomy Department, open by reservation, which could turn a late-evening portion of a wedding into something no other venue can offer.
Amenities
Accessibility features include designated accessible parking near the entrance, a ramp and handrails, push-button doors, and assistive listening devices on a first-come basis, with sign language interpretation available given two weeks notice. The building sits on Franklin Street within UNC’s campus, so it comes with brick sidewalks and curb cuts rather than a private lot, an urban-campus setting more than a self-contained venue grounds.
The planetarium’s history runs past astronomy alone: a Zeiss Model II projector shipped from Sweden in 1949 because German factories had been lost in the war, a 1969 Carl Zeiss Model VI star projector that displayed nearly 8,900 stars before its 2011 removal, and a 1984 shift to computer automation that made it one of the first planetariums in the country to run that way.
Location & Getting There
Morehead Planetarium sits in the middle of UNC’s Chapel Hill campus, on Franklin Street, which puts a wedding here inside a working university rather than a standalone venue with its own driveway and lot. Guests coming from off campus will be navigating campus streets and sidewalks, and the surrounding area is the town of Chapel Hill itself rather than a rural or resort setting.
A domed theater with a hard, curved ceiling and no windows behaves differently than a flat-walled ballroom: sound reflects off that dome in ways a DJ needs to plan for in advance, and the fulldome digital system already running overhead means any music program can be built to work with the space’s existing audio and visual setup rather than fighting against it.
