The Space
Morehead City Country Club traces back to September 1949, when it was incorporated as Enchanting Waters Country Club, with the golf course opening for play in 1952 and the clubhouse welcoming 236 charter members in 1953. That original clubhouse burned completely in November 1963 and was rebuilt and dedicated in 1966, and the property has kept reinventing itself since, most recently with a brand new clubhouse and ballroom completed in 2023.
The 2023 building added casual and fine dining, dedicated banquet facilities, and a rooftop lounge looking out over the 9th and 18th greens, so a couple booking here is working with a genuinely new room rather than a decades-old ballroom refreshed with paint. A waterfront pool with beach entry and swim lanes, finished in 2018, overlooks the Newport River and adds another outdoor option beyond the golf course itself.
Capacity & Layout
This is a private club, so events are available to members and to non-members sponsored by a current member, a detail that shapes the guest list and the booking process before anything else does. The ballroom in the 2023 clubhouse is the primary reception space, with a terrace and patio along the water and the rooftop bar as a separate, open-air option for cocktail hour or a smaller gathering.
The golf course itself, 18 holes at par 72 running about 6,345 yards over bentgrass greens, is not incidental scenery here: it is the reason the property exists, and its Newport River views are visible from the clubhouse, terrace and rooftop alike. A couple choosing this venue is choosing a golf club’s grounds and skyline as the backdrop, not a garden or a barn built for weddings specifically.
Amenities
Dining runs casual to fine, with the rooftop bar adding a separate service point for cocktails above the course, and the club operates year-round rather than closing for a season. Golf amenities extend to guests too, with a driving range, a chipping and putting green, and doubles tennis available, so a wedding weekend here can include activity for guests beyond the reception itself.
The course underwent a 2017 renovation under architect Randy Wilson that drew praise from World Golf Hall of Fame member Curtis Strange, and it currently ranks 83rd in the 2026 North Carolina Golf Panel Top 100, up 16 spots from its previous ranking. None of that changes how a wedding runs, but it says something about how carefully the grounds around the reception are maintained.
Location & Getting There
Morehead City sits on North Carolina’s Crystal Coast, and the club’s waterfront position on the Newport River puts the reception, terrace and rooftop bar all within sight of the water without being directly on the beach. As a private club, access runs through membership or a member’s sponsorship, which is worth settling early in the planning process rather than assuming open booking.
With a new enclosed ballroom for the reception and an open rooftop bar and terrace as the outdoor alternative, sound has two very different environments to work with here: the ballroom holds a system’s volume and keeps a dance floor energized indoors, while the rooftop and terrace call for equipment built for open air over the water and course.
