The Space
The house in downtown Raleigh’s Blount Street Historic District has moved once and changed purpose several times since Senator Augustus Summerfield Merrimon built it in 1876 as his private residence. It passed to Louisa Page in 1899, was deeded to Peace College in 1919 and served as the Wynne Hall dormitory until 1934, spent decades as state office space starting in the early 1970s, and was finally relocated to its current site by developers in 2008.
Heyens Hospitality bought the property in 2013, renovated it, and opened it as a wedding and event venue in 2014, the same year it was relisted on the National Register of Historic Places after its 2008 move had triggered an earlier delisting. A Carriage House was added in 2016, giving the venue a second, purpose-built event space alongside the original two story Italianate frame house with its ornamented Stick Style front porch.
Capacity & Layout
The Lawn is the largest space, accommodating up to 275 guests for a ceremony or an outdoor dinner under century-old trees, with tent or market lights available as add-ons. The Carriage House holds 200 for a seated dinner or up to 250 for a mingling-style reception, and its exposed beams, chandeliers, and rolling glass doors open directly onto a pergola and the lawn, so the indoor and outdoor spaces read as one continuous footprint rather than two separate rooms.
The Main House, with its original flooring, fireplaces, chandeliers, and porches, is used mainly for cocktail hour rather than the ceremony or reception itself, giving the day a third distinct room to move guests through. That three-space structure, Lawn, Main House, Carriage House, means a couple can spread a wedding across a full afternoon and evening without repeating the same backdrop in every photo.
Amenities
A large bridal suite with ample natural light comes stocked with a steamer, sparkling wine, coffee, water, and orange juice, while the groom’s preparation room has its own mini fridge stocked with beer and soft drinks, so both sides of the wedding party have a dedicated, furnished space rather than sharing one room split down the middle.
Bar service starts at $35 per person with house beer, wine, and liquor included, and the venue includes a genuine weather contingency: the decision on an outdoor versus indoor ceremony can be made as late as 8am the morning of the wedding, and the Carriage House is built to flip from ceremony to reception setup during cocktail hour if plans change last minute.
Location & Getting There
Sitting inside the Blount Street Historic District, the property is a few doors from the Governor’s Mansion in the heart of downtown Raleigh, on roughly one acre of grounds, close enough that guests can walk between hotels and the venue rather than relying on a shuttle. One hour of included rehearsal time is typically scheduled the day before, between 10am and noon for weekend events.
All event spaces are fully ADA accessible, though the second floor getting-ready suites are not, which is worth flagging early for any guest or wedding party member who needs it. For sound, the Carriage House’s exposed beams and hard flooring carry a reception clearly, while the open Lawn under century-old trees calls for outdoor-rated equipment that can project across 275 guests without the walls a room like the Carriage House provides.
