The Space

Liberty Hall started as HOME PLACE, a house Thomas Major Sloan built between 1840 and 1849 for his wife Nancy and their fifteen children, and it still carries that history in heart pine floors and high ceilings in the original section of the 7,300-square-foot building. It changed hands and purposes many times, from Sloan family home to Harris Hall livestock farm to boarding house to abandoned property, before three Virginians restored it as Liberty Hall in 1984.

The rear yard was only turned into a dedicated event space in January 2024, when current owners added a gazebo ceremony site and a 2,400-square-foot event tent set beneath mature oak and pecan trees, on top of more than 12,000 square feet of outdoor space total. That means a couple booking here gets both the character of a house built in the 1840s and infrastructure, tent, tables, grounds, that is genuinely new rather than decades-old rental equipment.

Capacity & Layout

Liberty Hall seats up to 125 guests, which lines up with the size of the reception tent and keeps the event scaled to fit the grounds rather than overflowing them. Ten guest rooms with private bathrooms are available on site, so out-of-town family or the wedding party can stay through the weekend rather than driving in for the day, and couples can rent the entire property, house included, for a fully private event.

The layout separates naturally: the white gazebo sits on a grassy lawn under large trees for the ceremony, the 2,400-square-foot tent nearby handles the reception with soft seating built into the design, and wrap-around porches and sun decks give guests overflow space for cocktails without crowding the tent itself. That spread across 3 acres means a wedding here uses several distinct outdoor rooms rather than one tent doing all the work.

Amenities

The Bridal Veil room on the ground floor comes with its own private porch and bathroom, giving the wedding party a getting-ready space separate from guest traffic, and the historic dining room is available for breakfasts or smaller gatherings tied to a multi-day stay. A rear parking area with a wheelchair ramp connects directly to the rear deck, which matters given how much of the event happens across the grounds rather than in one room.

Two pickleball courts on the property give guests something to do during a Friday welcome event or a Sunday morning, an unusual amenity for a historic bed and breakfast, and the location within walking distance of downtown Pendleton means guests can wander into town between events without a car. Clemson University sits four miles away, which is worth knowing for anyone weighing hotel overflow if all ten rooms on site are already claimed.

Liberty Hall is in Pendleton, South Carolina, inside the Pendleton Historic District, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, so the surrounding streets carry the same period character as the house itself. Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport is about 45 miles away, a reasonable distance for out-of-town guests flying in, and downtown Pendleton’s shops and restaurants are close enough to walk to from the property.
