The Space
L.P. Frans Stadium opened in 1993 on 37 acres donated to the City of Hickory by Elmer Winkler in 1989, land that sat waiting for a minor league team to return to the city after decades without one. Built for roughly $3.8 million through a mix of city funds and private donations, the stadium takes its name from Lee Polk Frans, a local Pepsi bottler whose daughters made a large donation toward construction, a piece of local history baked into the building’s name.
The ballpark’s brick exterior sends fans in beneath archways, and brick columns support a sloping green roof that shades the seating behind home plate, a real architectural detail rather than a generic metal grandstand. Even the clubhouses have a name behind them: the home and visiting clubhouses were funded by a donation in the name of Forest Gaines, a local Hickory businessman. The stadium sits across from Hickory Regional Airport, about three miles from I-40.
Capacity & Layout
The stadium seats 5,062, a figure boosted on opening day by temporary bleachers installed down the left and right field lines, which pushed capacity from a base of 5,100 up closer to 8,000 for that first game. For an event held here, that scale means the stadium can flex from a gathering on the field or in a suite up through something using a large share of the seating bowl, depending on how much of the ballpark a couple books.
The ballpark runs on upper and lower concourses, with the lower concourse bisecting the seating bowl itself, so movement around the stadium happens on two distinct levels rather than one continuous walkway. The upper concourse includes suites, the press box, concession areas, and a team store, giving an event here access to enclosed, weather-protected space in addition to the open seating bowl, which matters for a reception that needs somewhere indoors as a backup or a base.
Amenities
On-site parking is available at the stadium, a practical point for a venue this size where guests are not relying on street parking in a residential area. The stadium’s suites offer an enclosed, more private alternative to the open seating bowl, useful for a smaller wedding party gathering or a rehearsal dinner separate from the main stadium experience, and the team store and concession infrastructure built into the upper concourse can support food and drink service for a larger event.
The stadium’s location is unusual in one specific way worth knowing: the concourse actually walks between two counties, Burke and Catawba, and Burke County was historically a dry county, meaning the team once needed a special permit just to sell alcohol on that side of the building. A third county, Caldwell, begins just a few hundred yards beyond the outfield, so this single property sits at the meeting point of three separate North Carolina counties.
Location & Getting There
The stadium sits in Hickory, directly across from Hickory Regional Airport and about three miles from I-40, making it a straightforward stop for guests driving in from elsewhere in the Piedmont. Starting in 2025, the Hickory Crawdads join the Carolina League, following an announcement from MiLB in July 2024, and the Catawba Valley Stars of the collegiate summer Great South League also play here, so this remains an active, in-use ballpark rather than a retired stadium repurposed for events.
A stadium built around baseball has a different sound profile than an indoor banquet room: the open seating bowl and hard concrete concourses mean sound projects outward and up rather than reflecting back the way it would in an enclosed hall, so a DJ setup on the field or in a suite needs speakers aimed to cover a much wider, more open area than a typical reception room, closer to how the stadium’s own sound system reaches the stands.
