The Space
The Joseph S. Koury Convention Center opened in 1991 as a 150,000-square-foot addition to what had originally been the Holiday Inn Four Seasons, a hotel that opened back in 1970 with 259 rooms and was, at the time, the largest hotel convention center in North Carolina. Joseph Koury designed the convention center’s layout himself, and by the time it opened it included a 40,000-square-foot ballroom and 70,000 square feet of exhibition space, numbers that put it in a different class than a typical hotel ballroom.
A 28-story tower with 485 additional guest rooms went up in 1996, bringing the hotel’s total room count to 1,014, and in 1999 the property rebranded from Holiday Inn to Sheraton specifically to better market its convention facilities to a national audience. Today the full complex spans 250,000 square feet of meeting and exhibition space across 70 breakout rooms plus the main ballroom, integrated directly with the Sheraton Greensboro hotel and adjacent to the Four Seasons Town Centre shopping mall.
Capacity & Layout
The main ballroom alone covers 40,000 square feet, and across the full complex the center can accommodate groups as large as 6,000 attendees, making it the largest hotel convention center between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta under one roof. For a wedding, that scale means the ballroom can flex from an intimate seated dinner up through a genuinely large reception without the room feeling empty or overcrowded at either end of that range.
With 70 separate breakout rooms available beyond the main ballroom, couples have real options for splitting up a wedding weekend, a rehearsal dinner in one room, a ceremony in another, and the reception in the main ballroom itself, all without guests needing to leave the building. The pre-function and exhibition space that connects these rooms gives cocktail hour or a welcome reception somewhere to happen that is not simply hallway space between rooms.
Amenities
Because the convention center is integrated with the nearly 1,014-room Sheraton Greensboro hotel, out-of-town guests have lodging steps away from the reception rather than needing a shuttle arranged, and the hotel itself includes three restaurants, three bars, a fitness center, and both indoor and outdoor pools for a wedding weekend that stretches beyond a single evening. Complimentary parking is available on site, including for buses, which matters for a wedding pulling in a large guest list.
Wi-Fi is complimentary for registered guests, there are no resort fees added on top of room rates, and the property is accessible throughout, with accessible parking, elevators, and routes into the meeting spaces from the main entrance. Standard check-in runs 4pm with check-out at 11am, worth building into a wedding weekend timeline if the wedding party is checking in and out of hotel rooms around the event itself.
Location & Getting There
The complex sits in Greensboro, directly adjacent to the 200-store Four Seasons Town Centre mall, and about 13 miles from Piedmont Triad International Airport, with a complimentary shuttle running between the hotel and the airport for guests flying in. That combination, an airport shuttle plus a mall next door, makes this one of the more straightforward Greensboro venues for a wedding party managing a mix of local and out-of-town guests over a full weekend.
Inside, the 40,000-square-foot ballroom is a large, carpeted hotel-style room built for exactly this kind of event, with a layout designed around amplified sound and a stage or head-table area rather than a converted space repurposed for it. A DJ setup in a room this size benefits from the ballroom’s soft carpeted floor and high ceiling, which control echo well and let music fill the room evenly rather than bouncing hard off bare surfaces.
