The Space

The Koger Center opened on January 14, 1989, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra giving the first performance in the building, a fitting start for what was, at the time, the first modern arts center built anywhere in South Carolina. Philanthropists Ira and Nancy Koger gave a substantial donation toward the $15 million construction cost, joined by the Knight Foundation of Akron, Ohio, Richland County, and the City of Columbia.

At 100,000 square feet, the center is anchored by Gonzales Hall, its 2,256-seat main auditorium, named for the Gonzales brothers, Ambrose Elliott, Narciso Gener, and William Elliott, who helped found The State newspaper in Columbia. But the building is not just one room. Performances and events also take place on the outdoor Plaza Stage, in the Lobby, the Gallery, the Black Box, and even on the Loading Dock, giving couples options well beyond the main auditorium for a wedding-related event.

Capacity & Layout

Gonzales Hall seats all 2,256 guests across Orchestra, Grand Tier, and Balcony levels, with continental seating throughout and, notably, no seat positioned more than 100 feet from the stage, a detail built into the room’s design specifically for sightlines. That figure matters for a wedding-scale event mainly as context: the smaller spaces, the Plaza Stage, Lobby, Gallery, and Black Box, are the ones realistically sized for a private wedding celebration rather than the full 2,256-seat hall.

Those smaller spaces give a couple real choices depending on the shape of the day. The outdoor Plaza Stage suits a ceremony or cocktail hour with open air and natural light, the Gallery and Lobby suit a standing reception with room to circulate, and the Black Box offers a flexible, enclosed alternative when weather is a concern. The center runs through roughly 535 events a year across all of these spaces combined, so the building is built for constant turnover between uses.

Amenities

The center underwent a full seat replacement across all 2,256 original 1988 seats in fall 2023, completed that September, so the main auditorium’s seating is current rather than original stock nearing forty years old. The building has also been formally attached to the University of South Carolina’s School of Music since 1995, and has functioned as a department within that school since 2018, which puts real institutional support and staffing behind day-to-day operations here.

In 2025, the Koger Center received the South Carolina Governor’s Award for the Arts in the Government category, recognition that reflects the ongoing investment in the building rather than just its 1989 debut. Acoustics were built into Gonzales Hall from the start and are described as state-of-the-art, a real advantage for any event with live music or a band, and one that carries over into how amplified sound performs in the smaller adjoining spaces as well.

Location & Getting There

The Koger Center sits on the University of South Carolina campus in Columbia, a downtown location that puts guests within reach of the city’s hotels and restaurants rather than an isolated event property. Its long-standing role as home to the Columbia City Ballet, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and Broadway in Columbia touring shows means the building sees a steady stream of visitors familiar with the venue, which can be a comfort for out-of-town wedding guests navigating an unfamiliar city.

Gonzales Hall itself was designed around acoustics first, with a stage and sightlines built for orchestras and touring productions, which makes a DJ setup in the main hall different from a typical reception room. For a wedding event, the Plaza Stage, Lobby, Gallery, or Black Box are the more practical rooms to run sound in, each with its own mix of open air, hard gallery flooring, or the more contained walls of the Black Box shaping how music carries to guests.
