The Space

Klondike Cabins traces back to the early 1920s, when John Hanes of Hanes Hosiery bought more than 1,000 acres around Grassy Creek and built a single cabin as a retreat. When his sister Lucy married Thurmond Chatham of Chatham Manufacturing, the two families expanded it into a vacation and hunting retreat, and it later became the official guest house for Chatham Manufacturing, complete with a working dairy farm of Golden Guernsey cattle. Derrill and Lori Rice bought the property in 2000 to preserve that history.

What the Rices preserved is now four separate cabins: The Lodge, the largest of the group; The Hanes Cottage, a duplex split into North and South suites; The Jackson Cottage, the smallest; and The Game Room, an amenity cabin with a pool table, poker table, and bar. Original 1920s hearths with working wood-burning fireplaces remain throughout, so the character here is not a reproduction of an old hunting lodge, it is the actual building, updated for weddings rather than replaced.

Capacity & Layout

The main dining room seats up to 50 guests for a plated meal, but event packages extend capacity to 60 through 120 guests once you account for the covered porch, the outdoor grounds, and tent options for the reception. That range gives couples room to choose between an intimate dinner inside The Lodge or a larger celebration that spreads across the grounds, with the dining room serving as the anchor point either way rather than the sole event space.

Beyond The Lodge’s dining room and two suites, the property spreads across 100 acres, with 42 of those acres set aside as secluded walking grounds and horseshoe pits guests can use during cocktail hour or between the ceremony and reception. An 8-acre lake sits at the heart of the property, with a covered porch overlooking it, giving couples a natural photo backdrop and a shaded outdoor gathering spot that does not require renting in a separate tent.

Amenities

The property includes 60 acres of vineyards, a separate 2-acre fishing pond, and a walking trail alongside Grassy Creek itself, so guests staying over have real grounds to explore rather than a parking lot and a single event room. The four cabins together sleep up to 16 guests, which means the wedding party, or close family, can stay directly on site rather than driving in the morning of, a real advantage for a property tucked into the Yadkin Valley Wine Region.

The Lodge’s kitchen is industrial grade and fully equipped, with an additional kitchenette in The Hanes Cottage, so caterers have real working space rather than a warming station. A parking attendant is provided specifically for wedding events, which matters on a property this size where guests could otherwise be unsure where to leave a car. The Game Room’s bar and games give guests somewhere to gather without crowding the dining room itself.

Location & Getting There

Klondike Cabins sits about a mile outside Elkin’s city limits, in the Yadkin Valley Wine Region, close enough to Grassy Creek Vineyard and Winery that the two properties share the same rural, working-farm character. This is not a venue guests stumble onto near a highway exit, it is a destination property, which fits with four cabins on site letting the wedding party and close family stay through the weekend rather than treating the wedding as a single-day drive-in event.

With ceremony space in outdoor clearings or on the lake-facing covered porch, and the reception able to move between the main dining room, the porch, and the outdoor grounds under a tent, sound needs to travel across different surfaces here: hard porch decking, open lawn, and an enclosed dining room. A DJ working this property should plan for an outdoor setup near the porch or lawn rather than assuming an indoor room will carry the whole event.
