The Space
Roanoke Rapids built this hall in 1975 to give the area a place for rentals, parties and receptions at a time when few venues like it existed nearby. The center still runs through roughly 150 events a year and draws about 50,000 guests annually, numbers that mark it as a working community room rather than a rarely used rental. A stage sits at one end with a screen mounted on the wall behind it, useful for a slideshow or a backdrop for photos.
The building has been kept up, not left to age quietly. Recent renovations added a new roof, at a cost of about $125,000, and modernized the bathrooms for roughly $100,000, on top of around $300,000 in landscaping work. The bathrooms had gone essentially untouched since 1975, aside from a 2003 update, so the current fixtures are a real improvement. We worked a wedding here and can say the space presents well for a room this age.
Capacity & Layout
The hall seats 500 guests at round tables and can hold up to 700 for a reception where more people are standing than sitting, giving couples flexibility depending on whether the day centers on a seated dinner or a cocktail-style celebration. At 8,000 square feet, the building is not just one open room. Three breakout spaces, Rooms A, B and C, sit alongside the main banquet hall, so a couple can peel off a cocktail hour, a kids table, or a gift table into its own space.
That side-room flexibility matters for how a day flows. Guests can mingle during cocktail hour in a breakout room while staff flip the main hall from ceremony rows to reception tables, or a smaller room can hold a quiet lounge for older relatives. The full kitchen and prep kitchen sit close enough to the main hall for catering staff to move plated food quickly, and the dressing room gives the wedding party somewhere private to finish getting ready.
Amenities
Beyond the kitchen and dressing room, the center offers free parking, separate men’s and women’s restrooms, and dedicated storage that caterers and rental companies can use for linens, chairs, or extra decor. The stage and its wall-mounted screen do double duty as a place for a band or DJ setup and as a visual anchor for the room, since every round table has a clear sightline to it whether the hall is set for 300 or pushed to its full 500-seat capacity.
One practical note: Kirkwood Adams only opens its booking calendar nine months out, so couples cannot lock in a date further in advance than that window allows. It is also a genuinely busy room. Every Saturday from November through February is already rented, along with about 75 percent of Friday nights in that stretch, which tells you this is a popular local choice for winter weddings, not a backup venue that happens to be available.
Location & Getting There
The center sits in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, run by the city’s Parks and Recreation department as a public facility rather than a private wedding business, part of why it has stayed affordable for local families over the decades. Guests arriving for a wedding here are coming to a familiar community landmark, and the free on-site parking means there is no separate lot fee or shuttle to coordinate.
Inside, the banquet hall is a large open room with hard flooring and a stage built into one end, giving a DJ setup a fixed, elevated position with a clean sightline down the hall. Because the room is open rather than broken up by columns, sound carries evenly to both the main hall and, through open doors, into the adjoining breakout rooms, so music from the stage reaches guests mingling in Room A or B without a second speaker setup.
