The Space
Kimpton Tryon Park Hotel opened in November 2017 at the corner of Third and Church Streets, an 18-story, 217-key building that was Kimpton’s first boutique hotel in Charlotte. The building sits inside a larger mixed-use development that also includes office and retail space, and its design deliberately echoes the contours of the 5.4-acre Romare Bearden Park right next door, so the hotel reads as part of the park’s landscape rather than a separate block dropped into Uptown.
Nineteen levels up, Merchant & Trade rooftop bar looks out over Romare Bearden Park, the high-rise towers of Uptown, BB&T Ballpark, and the piedmont hills beyond the city. Downstairs, Angeline’s serves Italian-inspired food as the hotel’s other restaurant. Between the two, the hotel offers more than 9,300 square feet of meeting and event space for couples who want everything from getting-ready rooms to the reception under one roof, without moving the wedding party between separate buildings.
Capacity & Layout
Private events at Merchant & Trade run from as few as 15 guests up to 150, which makes the rooftop workable for both an intimate ceremony and a full reception, depending on how the space is set. Being 19 stories up changes the layout conversation: instead of choosing between indoor and outdoor rooms, couples are choosing how much of the skyline view to build the evening around, and how much of the crowd stands at the rail versus seated further back.
The more than 9,300 square feet of meeting and event space elsewhere in the hotel gives a wedding weekend room for the pieces that do not belong on the rooftop, like a rehearsal dinner or a smaller gathering the day before. With 217 guest rooms in an 18-story tower, the hotel can also house a sizable guest list on site without shuttling anyone across town, which keeps the whole weekend inside a single building.
Amenities
The hotel does not have a pool, so any pool-party plans need a different venue, but it does welcome pets of any size at no extra charge, useful for couples who want a dog along for the weekend. Valet parking runs $51 a night with unlimited in and out privileges, and a fitness center on site covers guests who want a workout before the wedding day begins.
Check-in is at 3pm and check-out at noon, standard timing worth building into a wedding weekend schedule, particularly for out of town guests arriving the same day as the ceremony. There is no complimentary shuttle, so guests coming from Charlotte Douglas Airport or elsewhere in the city will need their own transportation or a car arranged by the couple ahead of time.
Location & Getting There
The hotel sits in the heart of Uptown Charlotte, directly beside Romare Bearden Park and within view of BB&T Ballpark, putting a wedding weekend right in the middle of the city rather than on its outskirts. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is about 6 miles away, an easy trip for guests flying in, and Uptown’s restaurants and hotels are within walking distance for anyone extending the trip.
With the main event space 19 stories up on an open rooftop, sound needs to be weather aware and carry cleanly against the open skyline view, while the hotel’s indoor meeting space downstairs, enclosed and away from wind, gives a more controlled setup for a DJ running a rehearsal dinner or a smaller reception.
