The Space

Kanuga began in 1909 as a private summer resort called Kanuga Lake Club, laid out by landscape architect John Nolen and architect Richard Sharp Smith for Charlotte banker George Stephens. A dam failure in 1916 sent the lake pouring toward Hendersonville and Asheville, and the resort struggled for over a decade until Bishop Kirkman George Finlay bought the property for the Episcopal Church in 1928, turning it into the church’s largest conference center.

The 1,400 acre property in the Blue Ridge Mountains centers on a 30 acre lake, with 20 miles of hiking trails threading the grounds. Nearly all of the original cottages and the outdoor Chapel of St. Francis are listed on the National Register as the Kanuga Lake Historic District, and the Chapel of the Transfiguration, built in 1938 from storm-salvaged timber and dedicated in 1942, still anchors the property’s spiritual center.

Capacity & Layout

Kanuga is rated for up to 440 guests and offers 18,000 square feet of full-service meeting space that can be customized room by room, which gives couples real flexibility in how they divide ceremony, dinner, and dancing across the property rather than being locked into one fixed room. The Kanuga Lake Inn, which opened in 1968 and let the property run year-round, anchors the indoor side of that space.

Because the grounds mix historic cottages, the newer Inn, chapels, and open acreage, layout decisions here are really about which combination of spaces fits the guest list, whether that means the Chapel of the Transfiguration for vows and the Inn’s dining spaces for the reception, or an outdoor ceremony by the lake followed by an indoor meeting-space reception protected from weather.

Amenities

On-site lodging covers the range from the 61-room Kanuga Lake Inn to 43 historic cottages with two to six bedrooms and six four-bedroom guest houses, so a wedding weekend here can house the whole guest list on property instead of scattering everyone across nearby hotels. The dining hall serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with buffet-style group catering available for larger parties.

Guests have access to 20 miles of hiking trails, the 30 acre lake for fishing and canoeing, tennis and pickleball courts, and a workout facility, all useful if a wedding weekend stretches beyond a single evening. Asheville Regional Airport is about 30 minutes away, which we noted when we worked an event on the property and planned load-in around the drive from the airport.

Location & Getting There

Kanuga sits just outside Hendersonville, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains, with the surrounding 1,400 acres providing a genuinely rural, wooded setting rather than a venue carved out of a town. That scale means travel time between spaces on property, such as from a cottage to the chapel or from the lake to the Inn, is worth building into the day’s schedule.

With events spread across chapels, lakeside grounds, and meeting rooms of different sizes, sound has to be planned space by space rather than set once and left; a lakeside ceremony calls for weatherproof, portable gear while an indoor reception in the Inn’s meeting space benefits from walls that hold the mix in the room instead of losing it to the mountain air outside.
