The Space

Kaleideum opened in February 2024 in a new five-story building in downtown Winston-Salem, the product of a 2016 merger between the Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and SciWorks. At nearly 70,000 square feet with four floors of permanent exhibits, the museum’s architecture is deliberately built around kaleidoscope geometry, so the building itself carries a distinct, colorful design rather than a generic event hall look.

The standout feature for an evening event is the rooftop, a two-story adventure playground with skyline views, fully accessible by indoor elevator, which gives a couple an outdoor city backdrop that most Winston-Salem venues cannot offer. Below it, the museum floors include the Digital Dome planetarium, a maker studio called By Design, and a water play exhibit called Wonders of Water, any of which could serve as a distinctive backdrop for photos during a private rental.

Capacity & Layout

No wedding-specific guest count is published, but the scale of the building, nearly 70,000 square feet across five stories, gives a sense of how much room a private event has to work with compared to a single-room venue. Private events are managed by Sterling Spaces, a Winston-Salem event company with more than 40 years of experience, which means the logistics of running a wedding through a working museum are handled by a team used to it.

The rooftop event space sits adjacent to the outdoor playground, built specifically to support covered rentals, so a couple can hold part of the evening outdoors under the sky and part of it inside the museum’s exhibit floors below. Quiet and wellness rooms are available on every floor, including inside the Little Learners gallery, a detail that could matter for a family with young children attending.

Amenities

The museum includes a grab-and-go cafe called Kaleidoscope Cafe on site, and ADA-compliant entrances and restrooms throughout the building, with accessible parking roughly 200 feet from the entrance. A nearby parking deck offers a discounted all-day rate for museum visitors, which simplifies arrival logistics for a wedding crowd that might otherwise be searching for street parking downtown.

The $48 million building was funded largely by Forsyth County, with $30.5 million from the county and another $3.8 million from the state, a level of public investment that shows in the finish and scale of the space. Architecture firms Stitch Design Shop and Gensler designed the building, and its location at West 3rd Street and Town Run Lane places it between Merschel Park and Liberty Plaza, both public green spaces.

The museum sits in downtown Winston-Salem, flanked by Merschel Park and Liberty Plaza, which gives an evening event easy access to outdoor public space right outside the building without needing to travel anywhere else. Guests arriving downtown have a well-known landmark to find, not a hidden side street.

We have worked an event on this property before, so we know the rooftop’s open-air adventure space handles sound very differently from the enclosed exhibit floors below it: outdoors on the rooftop, a DJ setup has to work against open sky and city ambient noise, while indoors, floors like the Digital Dome or the maker studio are built with hard interior surfaces suited to contained, purpose-built exhibit acoustics rather than a live dance floor, so sound checks should happen in whichever specific room is booked.
