The Space
Junction 800 occupies the former South Carolina Railroad Depot in Columbia’s Vista district, a building that has stood since about 1850 and ran as a working train depot into the 1980s. During the Civil War, the Young Ladies’ Hospital Association ran a rest station called Wayside Hospital here starting in 1861, treating more than 75,000 soldiers by the war’s end, and after Union forces burned the property in 1865 it was rebuilt by 1866.
The main space is nearly 11,000 square feet with dimmable track lighting throughout and an in-house sound system already installed, and it carries the Greek Revival and Italianate architectural details original to the depot. Before becoming an event venue, the building spent time as the bars Wet Willie’s and Jillian’s, so the current conversion is the latest chapter in a structure that has changed use several times without losing its original facade.
Capacity & Layout
The main space seats up to 500 or holds up to 1,000 standing, which puts it in a different class than most historic venues, large enough for a genuinely big wedding without needing an outdoor tent to expand capacity. For a smaller event, the Wayside Room offers 1,100 square feet on its own, seating 48 or holding 75 standing, with a built-in projector screen for anything that needs a slideshow or a video moment.
A front apron space with built-in cafe lights and five sets of double doors opens directly into the main room, which gives a couple a natural spot for cocktail hour or a greeting area that is distinct from the reception floor itself. Having the Wayside Room separate from the main space means a rehearsal dinner or a smaller related event can happen in the same building without needing the full 11,000 square foot room.
Amenities
The in-house sound system and dimmable track lighting throughout the main space mean a lot of the infrastructure a wedding needs is already built into the room rather than trucked in for the night. The exclusive caterer, Southern Way Catering, has served the Columbia area for more than 35 years, so food service comes from a caterer with real history in the building’s own neighborhood.
The property is one of 41 buildings that make up the West Gervais Historic District, which places it inside a recognized, preserved stretch of the city rather than a standalone renovated structure. That district status is part of why the exposed brick and original architectural details throughout the main space have stayed intact through the building’s several changes of use since the depot closed.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits in the heart of the historic Vista district in downtown Columbia, an area built around exactly this kind of converted industrial and railroad architecture, so guests arriving downtown are in a walkable neighborhood rather than an isolated lot. The Vista’s restaurant and gallery scene surrounds the building, giving out-of-town guests plenty to do before or after the wedding.
We have worked an event in this space before, so we know the main room’s exposed brick and high open ceiling, close to 11,000 square feet, give sound plenty of room to travel, which means a DJ setup there benefits from the in-house system already built for the space rather than fighting the room’s natural echo. The smaller, more enclosed Wayside Room holds sound tighter, making it the better option for a quieter reception or a rehearsal dinner apart from the main floor.
