The Space
Jones Chapel sits at the front of the Meredith College campus next to Johnson Hall, a sanctuary Meredith had wanted since 1948 but did not build until ground broke in 1981 and the chapel was dedicated the following year. Architect F. Carter Williams designed it and Davidson and Jones built it, and the sanctuary still holds the Andover Organ Company’s custom mechanical instrument, Opus 91, dedicated in 1983 and named for one of the college’s first graduates.
The chapel is named for Seby B. Jones, a former Meredith trustee chairman and Raleigh mayor from 1969 to 1971, and his wife Christina, who broke ground on the building together with the college president in July 1981. Traditional windows bring natural light into the sanctuary, and a second-floor choir area sits above the main floor, so the room has real architectural depth rather than being a single flat hall.
Capacity & Layout
Seating totals 350: 302 pews on the main floor, 2 handicap accessible spaces, 40 chancel chairs near the front, and 90 more seats in the balcony. That balcony seating matters for guest flow, it lets a couple accommodate a larger crowd without widening the main floor, and it gives late-arriving guests a place to sit without walking down the center aisle mid-ceremony.
The main floor covers 1,700 square feet and the balcony another 500, with a platform area roughly 13 feet by 40 feet at the front for the wedding party and any officiant setup. Wheelchair accessibility runs throughout the building, with ground-level entry, accessible restrooms, and a lift to all floors, so guests using a wheelchair are not limited to the main floor seating alone.
Amenities
A bridal room and dressing areas are available on site, so the wedding party can get ready in the building itself rather than arriving already dressed from somewhere else on campus. A kitchen is also available, useful for a reception held in the adjacent hall that can be rented alongside the chapel, and an outdoor gazebo sits next to the building for photos or a smaller outdoor moment before or after the ceremony.
Parking includes 18 attached spaces plus free on-street parking nearby, which keeps arrival simple for a campus venue. Since 1949, Meredith held its chapel services in Jones Auditorium while waiting for this building, so the chapel represents decades of planning before it opened, and that permanence shows in details like the custom organ and the chancel chairs built specifically for this room rather than rented in.
Location & Getting There
The chapel sits on the Meredith College campus in Raleigh, adjacent to Johnson Hall, which gives it the feel of a real campus landmark rather than a rented hall. Guests coming from around the Triangle are looking at a straightforward drive to a well-known Raleigh institution, with the added benefit of on-street parking and an attached lot right at the building.
We have worked a wedding in this chapel before, so we know how the room handles sound: it is a traditional sanctuary with pews, hard wood surfaces, and a working pipe organ, which means natural reverb is part of the room already. A DJ setup here has to work with that acoustic, keeping levels controlled rather than fighting the space, and the second-floor balcony and choir area give a natural spot to run speaker coverage evenly across both the main floor and the seats above it.
