The Space
Jewish for Good’s Levin Jewish Community Center opened in June 2011, the result of a seven million dollar building project on a Jewish campus in Durham that also holds the Lerner Jewish Community Day School and Judea Reform Congregation. Weddings here center on two connected spaces: the Sol Schechter Community Hall for the seated reception and dinner, and an atrium built for receptions and dancing right alongside it.
The building was designed from the start to be accessible and inclusive, with ramps, automatic doors, an elevator, and gender-neutral bathrooms throughout, which matters for a guest list that includes older relatives or anyone using mobility equipment. The atrium includes a cafe serving fresh homemade baked goods, giving a couple a built in option for a coffee and dessert station during the reception.
Capacity & Layout
The Sol Schechter Community Hall seats 120 guests at round tables or holds up to 200 auditorium style, so the room can flex between a formal seated dinner and a larger standing or theater style event depending on how a couple wants the night to run. The hall itself is 2,500 square feet, which sets real limits on table count and dance floor size at the upper end of that guest range.
Beyond the Community Hall, the building has nine meeting rooms with a combined capacity of 200 people, useful for a rehearsal dinner, a smaller welcome gathering, or breakout space for a wedding party getting ready separately from guests. The Resource Center, a 700 square foot room, comes with its own overhead projection and sound system already built in for a slideshow or speeches.
Amenities
The building operates under a Kashrut policy and is open to the entire community regardless of religious affiliation, worth knowing for a couple planning a kosher reception or working with a caterer who needs to follow those rules on site. The atrium’s cafe supplies fresh homemade baked goods, one piece of catering already built into the venue rather than something to source elsewhere.
The facility includes two zero-entry pools and the largest outdoor waterslide in the region, along with a fitness center and gym, all part of the wider community center rather than the wedding footprint itself. A couple should think of these as evidence of how large and full service the building is, not as amenities available for the reception, since the event space is the Community Hall and atrium specifically.
Location & Getting There
The center sits on a shared Jewish campus in Durham, next to the Lerner Jewish Community Day School and Judea Reform Congregation, about 19 miles from RDU airport, a reasonable distance for out of town guests flying in. Its location on a working campus with a school and congregation next door means a couple should plan around normal weekday activity if booking on a weekday rather than a weekend.
Indoors, the Community Hall and adjoining atrium are both enclosed rooms, which gives a DJ a contained, climate controlled space to work sound into for both the seated dinner and the dancing that follows in the atrium. Moving between the two rooms during the reception means planning where speakers and a mixing setup sit so that sound carries evenly whether guests are seated in the hall or dancing in the atrium.
