The Space

Independence Beer Garden opened July 15, 2014, on the plaza surrounding the Rohm and Haas Building, a modernist structure completed in 1964 and designed by architect Pietro Belluschi, later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Restaurateur Michael Schulson created the beer garden with food from chef Travis Masar, a Top Chef contestant, and the space wraps a full 360 degrees around the historic building itself.

The grounds mix reclaimed timbers, distressed metals, tivoli lighting, and repurposed shipping containers that provide air-conditioned indoor seating, an unusual combination for an outdoor venue that gives couples a genuine option to move guests inside if weather turns during an event. Landscape architects Groundswell Design Group designed the plaza layout, and the building’s louvered bronze-tinted Plexiglas facade, a signature Rohm and Haas product, still frames the space today.

Capacity & Layout

The beer garden holds more than 300 guests across nearly half a dozen distinct seating areas, including a rock garden with granite boulders, colorful Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, bar seating, and the air-conditioned shipping container spaces. That mix of seating styles means a wedding reception here naturally breaks into smaller conversational pockets rather than one uniform banquet layout, which changes how a couple might think about guest flow through the event.

Two bars operate throughout the space with a combined 40 taps of regional and domestic craft beer, giving guests self-serve variety without a single bottleneck bar line. Game areas with ping pong, giant Jenga, shuffleboard, and cornhole, plus a 15-foot projection screen, give guests something to do between the ceremony and formal reception moments, useful for a wedding that wants a more casual, drawn-out celebration.

Amenities

A full American menu is served alongside the craft beer and cocktail selection, so food and drink are both handled in house rather than requiring an outside caterer for a reception held here. A parking garage sits on premises, a real convenience for a downtown Philadelphia venue where street parking would otherwise be scarce for a full guest list arriving at once.

The venue is wheelchair accessible, and its status on the National Register of Historic Places since 2007 means the historic building itself is part of the backdrop for any event, not just the garden around it. Regular hours run Wednesday through Sunday, and while the space is open year-round, it functions primarily as a seasonal destination from spring through fall.

Location & Getting There

The beer garden sits at 6th and Market Streets in Philadelphia, directly overlooking the Liberty Bell and Independence National Historical Park, a setting that puts a wedding reception here in walking distance of some of the city’s most recognized landmarks. That location makes it an easy stop for out-of-town guests who want to combine sightseeing with the wedding weekend.

Because the venue is almost entirely outdoors with only the shipping-container sections enclosed, sound has to be managed for an open-air space bounded by a historic building on one side and city streets on the others: speakers get positioned to reach the scattered seating areas evenly, and the shipping containers offer a natural quieter zone for guests who step away from the main dance floor and music.
