The Space
Il Bella Gardens sits on 20 wooded acres in the foothills of Stanly County, about an hour’s drive from Charlotte, and the property’s history has a personal thread running through it: original owners Kim and Larry McIlwaine first converted the land into a wedding space for their own daughter before opening it to other couples. On May 30, 2020, Callie married Danny here, and that same night Kim offered to sell them the venue, a sale that closed a few months later.
The grounds include flower gardens, landscaping, and multiple outdoor ceremony locations, from open grassed areas to wooded clearings, giving couples real choice in where the ceremony itself takes place rather than a single fixed spot. WeddingWire lists the venue as having a long track record in business, and an on-site guest house lets the wedding party or family stay overnight on the property instead of driving in and out.
Capacity & Layout
Il Bella Colonna, the venue’s open-air columned pavilion, seats up to 250 guests and comes with a dance floor, an oak ceiling, and ceiling fans, so it is built to handle a full-size reception under cover without being enclosed on all sides. For smaller weddings, Il Bella Villetta is an enclosed cottage space accommodating up to 75 guests with its own cobblestone patio, a genuinely different feel from the pavilion for couples planning a more intimate day.
A separate cottage on the property serves as a gathering point before ceremonies and includes a prep kitchen and bathrooms, useful for a wedding party getting ready or a caterer staging food ahead of service. Rentals provided include tables, chairs, centerpieces, linens, an altar or arch, dance floor, drapery, and lighting, which covers most of what a couple would otherwise need to source separately for either the pavilion or the cottage space.
Amenities
Outside catering is welcome since the venue does not provide its own, giving couples freedom to choose a caterer rather than working from a fixed in-house menu. Bar service is available on site starting at $27 per person and includes house beer, house wine, specialty options, and a champagne toast, a package that covers a standard reception bar without requiring an outside vendor.
The venue provides professional wedding planning support, setup and cleanup, event coordination, and even shuttle service for guests, along with get-ready rooms and WiFi, a fuller slate of included services than many garden venues offer. Wheelchair access is available throughout, and on-site parking accommodates the guest count without needing an off-site lot or shuttle from elsewhere.
Location & Getting There
The venue sits about an hour from Charlotte and roughly 30 to 35 minutes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, a reasonable distance for flying guests while still delivering the wooded, rural feel that Stanly County offers. Peak season runs March through June and August through November, with January, February, July, and December considered off-peak, which is useful for couples weighing timing against availability or price.
We have worked a wedding in the Il Bella Colonna pavilion, and its open-air, columned design with an oak ceiling changes how sound travels compared to a fully enclosed hall: the open sides let sound dissipate outward rather than reflecting back off walls, so speaker placement has to be closer to the dance floor to keep the music present without needing to fight the openness of the space.
