The Space

Huntingdon Valley Country Club was organized in 1896 and first played in 1897, making it the first club in the Philadelphia area organized exclusively for golf, with Scottish professional John Reid laying out the original nine holes a few miles from where the club sits today. The course expanded to 18 holes in the 1910s before the club moved to its current site in 1928 after automobile traffic began interfering with play, and W.W. Frazier, the club’s first president and a Civil War veteran, provided most of the acreage for the new location.

The clubhouse, designed by the Philadelphia firm of Tilden, Register and Pepper, opened to members on Easter Sunday, 1928, with three dining rooms, multiple terraces overlooking the valley, and guest accommodations on the upper floor. Its European-styled ballroom still carries hand-painted ceilings, hardwood floors, and an oversized fireplace from that original build. A couple marrying here is standing inside a room built nearly a century ago specifically to entertain the club’s members, not repurposed from some other use.

Capacity & Layout

The Ballroom seats up to 200 guests under those hand-painted ceilings, with an outside terrace overlooking the club’s 27-hole golf course for cocktail hour or photos. Smaller events have real options too: the Garden Lounge Room holds 60, the Brewer Room and Hyndman Room each hold 40, and the Heritage Room holds 22, so a rehearsal dinner or a smaller family gathering does not need to book the full Ballroom to feel appropriately scaled.

Ceremonies can happen in an outdoor courtyard or inside the ballroom itself, giving a couple both options without needing to choose a separate space entirely, and the reception then runs through the Ballroom and out onto the terrace as the evening moves outside. The William Flynn and Howard Toomey-designed 27-hole layout, including the Centennial or C Nine restored and reopened in 1998 after falling into disrepair during the Depression, gives photographers a working golf course as a backdrop rather than a generic lawn.

Amenities

In-house catering comes from the club’s executive chef, and open bar service is included with premium upgrades available, so a couple is not coordinating separate outside vendors for food and drink. Get-ready suites give the wedding party a private space to prepare on site rather than arriving already dressed.

Three separate parking lots handle a full wedding’s worth of guest cars without the crunch smaller venues run into, and the property sits on 170 acres, ranked the 8th best golf course in Pennsylvania and 3rd in the Philadelphia area by Golf Digest, grounds a couple can use for photos well beyond just the clubhouse itself.

Location & Getting There

The club sits in Huntingdon Valley, about seven miles northeast of Philadelphia, close enough for city guests to reach easily while the 170 acres keep the property feeling removed once they arrive.

We have worked a reception in the Ballroom, and its hardwood floors and hand-painted ceiling carry sound cleanly for a full dance floor, while the connected outside terrace lets a DJ or the couple move cocktail hour outdoors without losing the option to bring everyone back inside once the evening cools.
