The Space
Dr. William Rainey Holt built this house in 1834, and the Greek Revival details he chose, a white-washed wooden facade, ionic columns, Palladian windows, are still what you see walking up to it today. The house served as a headquarters for Reconstruction in the South during the Civil War, a piece of history serious enough to earn it a place on the National Register of Historic Places, and it sat as a private home for generations before sisters Nia Ward and Jera Hawn opened it as an event venue in 2020.
Inside, original hardwood floors, a fireplace, and 12-foot ceilings carry that history into the rooms where a wedding actually happens, lit by two antique chandeliers rather than anything installed for the occasion. A Garden Pavilion, added in 2023, gives the property a newer outdoor structure alongside the historic house itself, so a couple is choosing between a 190-year-old interior and a purpose-built outdoor space rather than settling for one or the other.
Capacity & Layout
The main event space is really two rooms in one: the Grand Parlor, at 313 square feet, and the adjoining Kilpatrick Room, at 260 square feet, separated by 8-panel pocket doors that can be closed for a smaller gathering or opened to combine the spaces for a larger one. Indoors, that setup seats around 50 guests; outdoors, across the property’s gardens and lawns, standing capacity runs up to 150, which is the number to plan around if the guest list leans larger than the house itself can seat.
The property carries over an acre of outdoor greenspace for a ceremony or cocktail hour outside the formal rooms, and four dedicated get-ready spaces, the Louisa Bridal Suite with its four-mirror marble vanity, plus the Rainey, Claudia, and Frances Suites, mean the wedding party is not sharing one small room to get dressed. A sunroom, a groom’s suite, and a butler’s pantry round out the house’s working spaces.
Amenities
Full bar service runs through the venue’s operating partner, Sterling Events Group, which began working with the Holt House in 2022, and catering comes either as an all-inclusive package with in-house partners or a la carte from an approved caterer list. Three bedrooms and three full bathrooms, plus a full kitchen, mean the house functions almost like a private residence for the day rather than a rented hall.
Holt House sits on Main Street in Uptown Lexington, close enough to walk to restaurants, bars, and shops like The Candy Factory and The Goose and the Monkey Brewhouse for a rehearsal dinner or a next-morning coffee run. Lexington is less than 30 minutes from both Winston-Salem and High Point, putting the house within easy reach for guests coming from either city.
Location & Getting There
Street parking in Uptown is free, and the venue operates year-round, so a couple weighing dates outside the busiest wedding months still has the full run of the house and grounds to work with.
For a DJ, the Grand Parlor and Kilpatrick Room work as a connected pair: original hardwood floors and 12-foot ceilings give a live band or a DJ setup real presence without needing much amplification, and opening the pocket doors between the two rooms lets sound and guests move together rather than being boxed into one small parlor for the whole reception.
