The Space

Long before it hosted weddings, this building served as the chapel for the Dix Hospital campus, built in 1955 to hold non-denominational services for patients and staff at what was then Dorothea Dix, a state mental hospital. When the hospital grounds became a public park, the Dix Park Conservancy took on a full renovation in 2020, adding HVAC, new windows and doors, and improved ADA access, and the building was renamed for Greg Poole Jr, the Conservancy’s founder.

The renovation preserved rather than replaced the chapel’s original mid-century modern character: decorative wood elements, a rose stained glass window, terrazzo floors, and mid-century stainless fixtures are all still in place. In the lobby, artist Christopher Holt was commissioned to paint a mural honoring the history of Dorothea Dix Park, with an accompanying musical score composed by Graham Sharp of the Grammy winning bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers, a detail few event venues in Raleigh can match.

Capacity & Layout

The main event hall is 3,200 square feet with an open floor plan and an elevated stage, rated for approximately 200 guests seated at tables, 400 in auditorium style seating, or 450 for a standing reception. That range gives a couple real flexibility in choosing a format: a seated dinner for 200 leaves a comfortable dance floor once tables clear, while a standing cocktail style reception can host well over double that.

Beyond the main hall, the property includes a front terrace of 984 square feet and an event lawn of 3,200 square feet that can hold a tent up to 40 feet by 40 feet, giving a couple outdoor options for a ceremony or cocktail hour. The venue also provides twenty round six foot tables, fifteen rectangular six foot tables, ten round twenty four inch cocktail tables, and 164 chairs, which covers most of a wedding’s seating needs without a separate rental order.

Amenities

A staging kitchen on site supports catering without requiring a caterer to bring in a full mobile kitchen, and two dressing areas give the wedding party separate space to get ready before the ceremony. The chapel also comes with a sound system and video projection equipment already installed, along with WiFi throughout, which covers a good share of the technical needs for both a ceremony and a reception.

One planning detail worth knowing ahead of time: outdoor events at Dorothea Dix Park with more than 200 guests require a permit through the City of Raleigh Office of Special Events. For a couple planning a larger outdoor ceremony on the event lawn, that permit process is worth starting early, since it is a city requirement tied to the park itself rather than something the chapel can waive.

Location & Getting There

The chapel sits inside Dorothea Dix Park, a 308 acre public park in the heart of downtown Raleigh, about five minutes from the Raleigh Convention Center. That location puts a couple’s guests close to downtown hotels and restaurants, with the added benefit of a genuine park setting and skyline views from the grounds rather than a parking lot backdrop.

Inside, the terrazzo floors and open floor plan of the mid-century hall carry sound cleanly across the room, and the elevated stage gives a natural focal point for a DJ setup without competing with the crowd for space. If part of the event moves outside to the terrace or event lawn, sound needs a separate outdoor setup, which is worth planning around the venue’s own permit rules for larger outdoor gatherings.
