The Space
Willie Park Jr., a British Open champion, laid out the original course here in 1922 while staying at Ocean City’s historic Plymouth Inn, and the club opened the following year as Ocean City Country Club. Tom Fazio reconfigured the course in 1972, and after passing through a stretch as the Sands Country Club under different ownership, Gene Gatti repurchased and renamed it Greate Bay Country Club in 1991.
The club hosted the ShopRite LPGA Classic from 1988 to 1997, and in 2004 Mark Benevento and former Philadelphia 76ers owner Pat Croce purchased it as part of a group of limited partners, continuing renovations to the clubhouse and banquet spaces. That layered ownership history is part of what a couple is booking: a club with real championship pedigree rather than a newly built banquet hall.
Capacity & Layout
Greate Bay’s banquet facilities accommodate up to 300 guests across three connected spaces: the Pub, the Greate room, and the Bay room. That range gives a couple room to scale a wedding up toward a large guest list while still having smaller, named rooms available for a rehearsal dinner or a more intimate reception within the same club.
The 18-hole course itself runs par-71 across 6,388 yards from the longest tees, and it is worth knowing as context even for a couple who will never play it, since the fairways and greens are what surround the clubhouse and shape the views from the reception spaces. A course built for tournament play tends to come with the kind of open, maintained grounds that photograph well regardless of a guest’s golf background.
Amenities
Beyond the banquet rooms, Greate Bay Racquet and Fitness adds two indoor tennis courts and four squash courts, two singles and two doubles, to the property, along with fine dining service. Those are amenities built for a membership that uses the club year-round, not just for events, which tends to mean a higher baseline of upkeep and staff familiarity with hosting people on site.
The club sits on 150 acres overlooking Great Egg Harbor Bay, with ponds and wildlife throughout the property, so the setting extends well past the clubhouse itself into open water views and natural grounds. For a couple choosing between an indoor banquet room and something with a water backdrop, Greate Bay’s bay-front acreage is a real point in its favor.
Location & Getting There
Greate Bay Country Club sits in Somers Point, New Jersey, just minutes from Ocean City, which puts it within easy reach of the shore towns many out-of-town guests will already be familiar with or staying near. The Great Egg Harbor Bay setting means the property backs onto open water rather than another neighborhood, which is part of what gives the course its links-style character.
For sound, the difference between the club’s three banquet rooms and its outdoor patio with firepits overlooking the first tee is the same difference any indoor-outdoor venue presents: the Pub, Greate room, and Bay room are enclosed spaces where a DJ system holds sound predictably within four walls, while the outdoor patio setup has open bay views and evening air to work against, so the choice of room affects the sound plan as much as it affects the guest count.
