The lake includes a sandy beach shoreline, a waterfront feature most mountain golf clubs do not have. The wider property runs to about 1,100 acres and includes 448 residences ranging from single-family homes to lakefront condos.
Aggie MacRae Morton, granddaughter of Hugh MacRae who first saw the Linville River Valley in 1885, founded the club in 1968 with cofounders Hugh Morton and John Williams. Aggie was a three-time state ladies’ amateur golf champion herself, and the club’s two Ellis Maples-designed golf courses, the 7,010-yard Championship Course and the shorter Mountain Springs executive course, reflect that founding connection to the game, alongside the lake and beach that give this particular setting its name. The Championship Course has since been ranked second in North Carolina for golf, behind only Pinehurst No. 2.
