The Space
A gristmill and barn built in 1768 by miller Samuel Lewis form the core of what is now the Grain House, and the structure once stored grain for the Continental Army stationed at nearby Jockey Hollow. William Childs purchased the property in 1929 and chose to restore rather than fully renovate the barn, converting it into an inn that opened in 1930 and operated as the original inn on the site through 1977.
That restoration-over-renovation approach means the building still carries its 18th century character today, including original beamed ceilings throughout. The Grain House now sits within the 10-acre Olde Mill Inn estate and has been named one of the 12 Prettiest Restaurants in New Jersey, a reputation built on the same historic bones rather than a modern build-out, so a couple touring the property is seeing the actual 18th century structure rather than a themed reproduction of one.
Capacity & Layout
Inside, the building is divided into several distinct dining rooms rather than one open hall: the Hunt room, the Fox and Hunt room, and the Hunt and tap room, the last of which houses the Coppertop Pub with 12 beers on tap. That division into smaller named rooms means an event here is naturally spread across a few connected spaces rather than gathered under one roof.
Outdoor dining is also available on patios surrounded by lawns and gardens during warm weather months, giving a couple the option to move part of a celebration outside the historic rooms. Across the 10-acre estate, that combination of several indoor rooms plus a patio and garden setting gives more layout flexibility than a single-room venue, at the cost of needing a plan for how guests move between spaces, since cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing may each land in a different room or on the patio itself.
Amenities
The property’s defining amenity is the building itself: original beamed ceilings, multiple period dining rooms, and grounds landscaped with lawns and gardens across 10 acres. The Hunt and tap room’s Coppertop Pub offers 12 beers on tap, useful for a couple wanting a built-in bar option as part of their reception.
Because the Grain House operates as a restaurant on the Olde Mill Inn estate, catering and bar service run through the same team that manages its day-to-day dining rooms, which means the kitchen already has experience serving groups in this specific building rather than adapting a banquet menu to an unfamiliar space. Being named one of New Jersey’s 12 Prettiest Restaurants also signals that the rooms photograph well without extra decor layered on top.
Location & Getting There
The Grain House sits on the 10-acre Olde Mill Inn estate in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, a setting that trades a purpose-built event campus for an actual 18th century property with history attached to the ground it sits on. Its role during the Revolutionary War, storing grain for the Continental Army at Jockey Hollow, ties the building to the surrounding area’s own history.
We have worked an event here, and the building’s several smaller dining rooms, the Hunt room, Fox and Hunt room, and Hunt and tap room, each with original beamed ceilings, mean sound stays fairly contained within whichever room a DJ sets up in rather than carrying through one large open hall, which calls for a more compact setup than a single big ballroom would.
