The Space

The mansion at Glen Foerd began as a summer home called Glengarry, built around 1850 in the Italianate style for Charles Macalester Jr., a Philadelphia banker who entertained U.S. presidents there. In 1895, industrialist and congressman Robert H. Foerderer bought the estate and brought in architect William McAuley to enlarge it in Classical Revival style, giving the house its current name and much of its present footprint by 1903.

What a couple walks through today is a 30,000-square-foot mansion with rooms spread across four floors, including an art gallery, a sun room, and a rathskeller downstairs, alongside a bridal suite upstairs that the venue describes as full of natural light. The estate was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and is now the only historic riverfront estate in Philadelphia that is open to the public.

Capacity & Layout

The Riverside Pavilion, a year-round tent set up for receptions, seats up to 300 guests, which is the number to plan a guest list against if the reception is happening there rather than inside the mansion itself. Couples who want a smaller, more intimate reception can use the mansion’s interior rooms instead, trading the pavilion’s capacity for the character of rooms built in 1850 and expanded in 1903.

Ceremonies can be staged on the riverside lawn or the stone terrace outdoors, or inside the mansion for a smaller group, and that same flexibility carries into the reception: the Riverside Pavilion tent or the mansion interior. Because the pavilion is set up for year-round use with its own lighting, a couple is not limited to a single warm-weather window the way an open-air tent alone would force them to be.

Amenities

Catering runs through Jamie Hollander Gourmet Cuisine through 2026, with the venue transitioning to Cescaphe starting in 2027, so a couple booking here is working with an in-house or venue-selected caterer rather than sourcing their own. Parking is available on site, with drop-off available right at the mansion’s front porch, useful for guests in formalwear who would rather not walk far from a parking area.

The grounds carry their own amenities: an 18-acre setting on the Delaware River with a formal rose garden planted by Caroline Foerderer in the early 1900s, a gazebo, a boathouse, and riverfront oaks that predate the mansion itself by centuries. A wheelchair lift gives access to the first floor of the mansion, though the graveled riverside paths and restrooms are noted as not fully accessible for mobility devices, worth planning around for guests who need it.

Location & Getting There

Glen Foerd sits in northeast Philadelphia along the Delaware River, a Fairmount Park property operated by the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation together with Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. The grounds are open daily from 8am to dusk and the mansion itself is open to the public Friday through Sunday from 10am to 1pm, so a couple touring before booking can plan a visit around those public hours.

We have worked a wedding at Glen Foerd and know the two main event spaces have very different acoustics. The mansion’s interior rooms are enclosed, formal spaces that hold sound close, good for a quieter reception, while the Riverside Pavilion is a large open tent along the water, which means a DJ needs to push sound to fill that space rather than relying on walls to contain it.
