The Space

Glasbern’s land was first deeded in 1787 to farmer Melchior Siep, just after the Revolutionary War, and the building couples see today was raised in 1870 by John Mohr in Colonial Revival style. The property worked as an active farm until 1972, then sat empty until Al and Beth Granger bought it in 1985 and converted the barns and outbuildings into a country inn, turning an old tractor shed into the Carriage House and the garage into the Gate House.

That barn-to-inn conversion is still visible in the details: the main barn holds the restaurant, pub, kitchen and front desk under cathedral ceilings with exposed beams original to 1870. The property has been part of Historic Hotels of America since 2011, and the newest addition, the Grand Lodge, went up in 2014 specifically to replace the property’s old wedding tent with a permanent 3,250-square-foot room built for large gatherings.

Capacity & Layout

A wedding here can spread across several named rooms rather than one hall: the Grand Lodge holds up to 150 for a reception, the Glasloft up to 80, and the more intimate Grainery up to 16, while the Packhouse carries a 640-square-foot meeting room for groups up to 30. Structured capacity tops out around 180 for a full event, which gives a couple room to choose a room sized to their actual guest list instead of overpaying for empty space in an oversized hall.

Lodging is built into the property too, with 34 guestrooms spread across seven separate structures, including the Carriage House, Gate House, Garden Cottage, Farmhouse Suites, and Barn Rooms with standard and whirlpool options. That means the wedding party, and often a good share of the guest list, can stay on site for the whole weekend rather than shuttling in from a hotel, which changes the pace of a rehearsal dinner and a next-morning breakfast alike.

Amenities

The Grand Lodge itself carries a 450-foot bar area and an indoor stone fireplace, and the outdoor tented facility on the Lodge’s patio runs from May through October for up to 150 guests who want part of the day outside. The restaurant, set in a restored 19th-century barn, serves farm-to-table food grown on the property’s own 150 sustainable acres using both traditional and hydroponic methods, so the kitchen is drawing from the same ground the ceremony might be held on.

Beyond the event spaces, guests staying over have a seasonal heated outdoor pool, a 24-hour fitness center, and walking trails across the farm to use between wedding events. The property has picked up recognition for exactly this kind of stay, named a Top Romantic International Destination by Yahoo! Travel and a Best Romantic Weekend Getaway by Philadelphia Magazine, alongside a Best Meeting Venue nod from Pennsylvania Meetings & Events for its event-hosting side.

Location & Getting There

Glasbern sits in Fogelsville, about 10 miles from Allentown, with Lehigh Valley International Airport roughly 14 to 15 minutes away, close enough that out-of-town guests flying in are not facing a long drive after they land. Parking is free and on site, which matters at a property spread across seven buildings and 150 acres, since guests need to be able to get from their car to the right room without confusion.
