The Space

Built in 1855 as the Second Reformed Church, this building in downtown Reading has already outlived one full congregation and one condemnation notice before becoming a wedding venue. In 1892, Reading Railroad president George Baer funded a major renovation that added the features still visible today: German-made stained glass windows, solid brass sconces, and detailed woodwork throughout the sanctuary, along with a marble pulpit and ornate brass fixtures.

Hopewell Mennonite Church took over the building, holding its first evening worship service in December of 1981 and formally purchasing the property the following September, in 1982. Membership declined steadily over the following decades, and by around 2017 the congregation had shrunk to about a dozen members while the building itself deteriorated: the roof was buckling and the outer walls were bowing badly enough that the city condemned the property as unsafe, closing the church after nearly a century and a half of religious use.

Capacity & Layout

Developer Alan Shuman purchased the condemned building and invested more than $1 million reconstructing and restoring it from the ground up, work that returned the sanctuary to something closer to its 1892 condition rather than a modernized reinterpretation of it. That restoration is what makes the chapel usable today: the German stained glass, brass sconces and detailed woodwork a couple sees when they walk in are the same features George Baer paid to install more than a century ago, not replicas.

The building is now open for event rentals, including weddings and concerts, with the sanctuary itself, featuring the marble pulpit and ornate brass details, serving as the primary space for ceremonies and performances.

Amenities

Because the room was built as a church sanctuary and restored rather than converted, it carries the proportions and finishes of a real 19th-century religious space: high ceilings, hard surfaces, and a defined center aisle leading to the pulpit at the front.

For a couple choosing a historic chapel over a modern hall, the appeal is largely in that authenticity: stained glass that has been in place since 1892, brass fixtures original to the same renovation, and woodwork that survived both a declining congregation and a condemnation before being saved rather than replaced. That history gives the room a weight a newly built chapel cannot replicate, even one designed deliberately to look historic from the outset.

Location & Getting There

The George Baer Chapel is in downtown Reading, Pennsylvania, in a dense historic block that has held religious buildings for well over a century and a half. Guests arriving for a wedding here are coming into the older core of the city rather than a suburban event campus, walking into a building whose exterior and interior both predate most of what surrounds it today, restored rather than rebuilt from scratch to get there.

Inside, the sanctuary’s high ceiling, hard plaster and wood surfaces, and long, narrow proportions are built to carry an organ and a congregation’s singing, which means recorded music and a DJ’s speakers behave differently here than in a low-ceilinged banquet room: sound has more room to bloom and more reflective surface to bounce off, so levels need to be set with that reverberant, sanctuary-like acoustic in mind.
