The Space

Front Street Brewery has been pouring its own beer in downtown Wilmington since June 1995, but the building it occupies had already lived several other lives by then. The building opened its doors on Front Street in 1865, during the Civil War’s Second Battle of Fort Fisher, as a dry goods store. Over the following century it housed the largest carpet store in North Carolina, a dentist’s office, a Kuppenheimer suit shop, and George Steiff’s showroom of musical instruments and Crosley radios.

Foy, Roe & Company, a men’s clothing store, held the space from 1940 until 1982, after which the building sat vacant for more than a decade. A fire had already struck it once, in 1922. Front Street Brewery opened in 1995 as North Carolina’s seventh brewery and has since become Wilmington’s longest continuously operating one, giving the building its longest single tenancy since that first dry goods store nearly 130 years earlier.

Capacity & Layout

The brewery operates as a working taproom and restaurant on Front Street, with the taproom itself available for private parties. There is no separate banquet hall here: a wedding reception at Front Street Brewery takes place inside the same room where the beer is made and served day to day, rather than a room set apart just for private events.

That shapes the feel of the event toward a relaxed, downtown gathering rather than a formal ballroom affair, since guests are seated in the same space regulars occupy on an ordinary night. A full menu is available for private events through the brewery’s on-site catering, so food service is handled by the same kitchen without needing an outside caterer.

Amenities

Ten or more craft beers are brewed in-house and kept on tap, and the brewery also carries the largest bourbon and whiskey selection in North Carolina, according to local coverage. For a couple building a bar around craft beer or brown spirits rather than a standard open bar, that depth of selection is already built into the venue rather than something that has to be trucked in and stocked for the night.

Front Street Brewery keeps both indoor and outdoor seating, including an outdoor patio, so a reception can spread between the taproom and the sidewalk-facing space outside depending on the weather and the size of the group. Regular hours run Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 in the morning to 9 at night, and Friday and Saturday until 10, which gives a sense of how late the space is normally in use before any private event extends those hours.

Location & Getting There

The brewery sits in the heart of downtown Wilmington on Front Street, in a historic commercial block that has been in continuous use since before the Civil War ended. Guests parking for the evening can use the Market Street parking deck nearby, which offers the first thirty minutes free, an easier option than searching for street parking in a busy downtown corridor on a weekend night.

Because the event space is the working taproom itself rather than a converted hall, the room carries the hard floors, exposed fixtures and open sightlines of a brewery and restaurant, with an adjoining outdoor patio as a second, softer-surfaced option. That combination gives a DJ two distinct rooms to work between, an indoor bar-and-taproom setting where sound reflects off hard surfaces, and an outdoor patio where it opens up and disperses.
