The Space
Forest Lodge began in 1933 as a private summer retreat before growing, decade by decade, into one of New Jersey’s larger event properties, and that layered history is part of what a couple is choosing when they book here. The Alberto family has run the venue since 1980, and the current version spans four distinct spaces across more than 40 acres in the Watchung Mountains, each with its own feel rather than one hall doing double duty.
The Sherwood Chalet, converted from a former country rock bar in 1985, is the indoor banquet hall and the space most weddings use for a formal reception. Maple Grove, added more recently for outdoor ceremonies, brings a large pavilion, a patio, and an Aurora sailcloth tent with fire pits and its own bar, giving couples a genuinely outdoor option just steps from the indoor hall, with Apple Grove and Cypress Grove available as additional pavilions on the grounds.
Capacity & Layout
The Sherwood Chalet comfortably seats up to 180 people and includes an outdoor gazebo, which makes it a workable size for a mid-size wedding without feeling like a cavernous hall. Across all four venues on the property, Forest Lodge can handle as many as 6,000 guests, a figure that reflects how much land and how many separate spaces sit on the grounds rather than any single room’s size, and it means the property can host multiple events at once without one crowding another.
Maple Grove’s pavilion, patio, and tented area give a ceremony and reception a fully outdoor path, while the Apple Grove’s two 4,000-square-foot pavilions add recreation space with basketball, volleyball, and softball facilities for a wedding weekend that stretches beyond a single evening. Couples choosing between the Chalet and Maple Grove are really choosing between an indoor banquet room and an open-air tent setting, and that choice shapes nearly every other decision that follows.
Amenities
Forest Lodge offers both on-site and off-site catering with European and CIA-trained chefs, and has specialized in serving Fortune 500 companies for more than 60 years, a track record that speaks to how much event infrastructure is already built into the property. Two free parking lots sit on either side of the grounds, which keeps guest arrival simple even for a large wedding, without a single lot getting overwhelmed by everyone arriving at once.
The Maple Grove bridal suite gives the wedding party a private space with a patio and fire pit area to get ready near the ceremony site rather than off property. Between the Sherwood Chalet’s indoor amenities and Maple Grove’s outdoor bar and fire pits, the venue covers both a formal indoor reception and a more relaxed outdoor gathering without a couple needing to choose only one style for the entire day.
Location & Getting There
The property sits on 40-plus acres in the Watchung Mountains of Somerset County, in northeastern New Jersey, close enough to draw guests from the wider region without being deep in the mountains. The two free parking lots on either side of the grounds mean guests do not have to circle for a spot or rely on a shuttle for a venue this size, even with several hundred people arriving over the same half hour.
We worked a wedding in the Sherwood Chalet, where the indoor banquet hall’s contained walls hold sound well for dinner and dancing, a contrast to Maple Grove’s open pavilion and tent, where an outdoor setup has to account for open air on at least one side. Knowing which of the two spaces hosts the reception changes how a DJ sets up before the first song plays.
