The Space
Six years before the inn itself opened, the Fearrington House Restaurant was already serving dinner in the original 1927 homestead built by John Bunyan Fearrington, and the Fearrington House Inn followed in 1986. The land itself goes back further: William Cole bought the 640 acres in 1786, and the property passed through generations of farming, cotton, tobacco, corn, and by the 1930s dairy, before R.B. and Jenny Fitch bought it in 1974 and began building the village that surrounds the inn today.
Fitch had served as an Air Force pilot and admired the English villages he saw overseas, and that influence shows in the finished property: 32 individually designed guest rooms, gardens Jenny Fitch began planting in 1980, and a restored 1927 barn now used for events. Belted Galloway cattle, added to the pastures in 1983, have become the village’s unofficial mascot, grazing in view of the gardens and walking paths that couples and their guests wander during a wedding weekend.
Capacity & Layout
The restored Barn is the main event space, roughly 5,000 square feet, and seats up to 300 guests for a banquet, with a theater-style layout stretching to 400 for a ceremony without tables. That range covers most wedding sizes without a couple needing to choose between a room that is too small or one that swallows a smaller guest list.
For ceremonies, Jenny’s Garden offers a fountain and a formal Knot Garden as a backdrop, and the Garden Terrace adds a stone fireplace, brick patio and a covered pavilion for cocktail hour or a reception that spills outdoors. Smaller gatherings can use the Granary or one of the private dining rooms inside the restaurant itself, so the property scales from an intimate rehearsal dinner up to a full 300 guest reception in the Barn.
Amenities
Catering runs through the on-site Fearrington House Restaurant, led by Chef Paul Gagne, who applies European technique to Southern ingredients grown largely on the property, and the Fearrington House Bar and Galloway’s Wine & Beer Bar cover drinks for cocktail hour and reception. The inn’s 32 guest rooms let a wedding party and out of town guests stay on site rather than book a separate hotel and shuttle in for the day.
The property has been recognized with Relais & Chateaux membership since 1988, the first in North Carolina, along with AAA Five Diamond and Forbes Travel Guide Four Star ratings, and it includes a spa and both an indoor and a seasonal outdoor pool for a couple looking to make a wedding into a weekend rather than a single afternoon.
Location & Getting There
Fearrington sits on 1,600 acres of gardens and grounds in rural Chatham County, roughly eight miles from Chapel Hill, close enough for local guests but far enough to feel like a retreat once you are through the gate. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is about 25 minutes away for anyone flying in.
Inside the restored Barn, high ceilings and the mix of hard wood floors with soft draping and furnishings give a DJ room to run a full sound system for both a ceremony and a reception without the room turning harsh or boomy, while the outdoor Garden Terrace, with its covered pavilion, handles a smaller acoustic setup for cocktail hour before guests move indoors for dancing.
