The Space
Built in 1917 as an exhibition hall for the Sandhills Fair, one of the major country fairs in the Southeast through the mid-1920s, the building now known as the Fair Barn is the oldest surviving early twentieth-century fair exhibition hall in North Carolina. A tornado tore through it in 1932, and for decades afterward it served as a horse stable rather than a public hall, part of the working Pinehurst Harness Track, itself the oldest continuously operating equine sports facility in the state.
The Village of Pinehurst bought the Harness Track and the Fair Barn in 1992, when the building had nothing left but a dirt floor, exposed wood walls and posts, and bare roof trusses. The Village Heritage Foundation, formed the following year by Joyce B. Franke, spent a decade raising the funds for a faithful restoration, finished in early 2003, that brought back the Mission-style structure without erasing its history as a fair hall and a stable.
Capacity & Layout
The main hall runs 8,249 square feet inside a 10,000 square foot facility, and it seats up to 500 for a banquet-style layout or 600 in row seating, with room for 800 standing. That range gives a couple real flexibility: a seated dinner reception can comfortably clear 400 guests without feeling the room’s limits, while a ceremony using row seating can push past that if the guest list runs large.
A stage and dance floor are available to rent separately, 12 sections of 4-foot by 8-foot staging with black skirting, paired with a 24-foot by 24-foot wood parquet dance floor, which means the performance and dancing areas are built pieces rather than open floor a couple has to define themselves. Two dressing rooms, each with full-length mirrors and lighted vanities, sit apart from the main hall for getting ready before the ceremony.
Amenities
The kitchen is a real working kitchen, not a warming station: a commercial refrigerator, freezer, ice maker, double sink, commercial dishwasher, gas range, stainless steel worktables and bus carts are all on site, which matters for a caterer planning a full-service reception rather than working around a residential-grade setup. Wireless high-speed internet is also built into the building, useful for anything from a livestreamed ceremony to vendor coordination during setup.
Parking runs to 135 standard spaces plus 7 designated handicap spaces, with attendants available to hire, so a wedding pushing toward the hall’s larger capacities has a parking lot sized to match. The 2 1/2-story ceilings and large skylights let natural light fill the main hall during the day, and the unique pigmented concrete floor and the original wooden trusses overhead carry the building’s Mission-style character into the reception itself.
Location & Getting There
The Fair Barn sits inside the Pinehurst Harness Track, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in November 1992, with the Fair Barn included as part of that historic district. That setting keeps the building surrounded by the working track rather than isolated on its own lot, so the drive in passes through a piece of Pinehurst’s equine history before reaching the hall.
We’ve worked this room, and the tall 2 1/2-story ceiling with its skylights and open wooden trusses changes how sound behaves compared to a lower, flatter hall: with that much air overhead and the original wood surfaces around the room, a DJ setup needs speaker placement built for a large, high-ceilinged volume rather than a tight, close-walled reception space.
