The Space
In 2016, Jessica and Matt Evans left Southern California for a stretch of pastureland in North Carolina’s Piedmont, in Rowan County, and built what is now Evans Family Farm from 30 laying hens, a run of broiler chickens, and a few lambs and pigs on 10 acres. What started that small has since grown back into the farm’s original footprint of 100 acres, bought back parcel by parcel over the years. This is a working farm first, and any event here sits inside that operation rather than beside it.
The farm store stands just five feet from where the pastures begin, so the retail side of the operation and the grazing side are functionally the same space. Matt’s parents live on the property, and his father is out with the animals daily, which keeps the place working rather than staged for visitors. The land is worked with rotational grazing and regenerative practices, moving animals across paddocks in a way that keeps the pasture itself part of the working view.
Capacity & Layout
Evans Family Farm does not publish a built reception hall or a fixed guest count, and that is true to what it is: a livestock operation with a farm store and open pasture rather than a purpose-built event space. What exists instead is 10-plus acres of reclaimed grazing land, laid out for rotational grazing rather than rows of tables, which means any gathering here is shaped around the working paddocks and the store rather than a banquet floor plan.
That open layout has an upside for a couple who wants something unstaged: the pastures and the store sit close enough together that guests can move between them without a long walk, and the rolling Piedmont ground around Mount Ulla gives a natural backdrop instead of a rented one. Because the space was never engineered for seating charts, planning here leans on the farm’s own rhythm, including the demonstrations and classes it already runs several times a month.
Amenities
The farm store keeps set hours: Monday, Tuesday and Friday from noon to 4pm, and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, and the store itself hosts story time, classes and demonstrations several times a month. That regular public use is itself a kind of amenity: the property is accustomed to hosting groups, moving people through the store and pastures, and running scheduled programming rather than sitting closed between visits.
The farm also sells its pasture-raised beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey and eggs at the Uptown Farmer’s Market in Charlotte every Saturday year-round, plus other markets seasonally, so the products a couple might taste at a farm event are the same ones the Evans family sells across the region. Jessica, a former high school Spanish teacher, and Matt run the day-to-day themselves, which keeps the operation personal rather than run through outside staff.
Location & Getting There
The farm sits in Rowan County, near Mount Ulla, on the Piedmont plateau between Salisbury and the greater Charlotte area, an easy regional drive for guests coming from either direction. The setting is rolling hills and open pasture rather than a wooded or waterfront site, so the drive in itself is part of the scenery, past working fields rather than subdivisions.
We have worked this room once before, and the biggest planning note carries over directly: this is open pasture with no walls and no ceiling to work with, so sound has to be pushed outward rather than allowed to fill a room, which means speaker placement and coverage across the open field matter more here than volume alone.
